karennash This is a feel good movie about the under dog beating the odds. This film uses the exact locations not just sets so you get a real sense of what it was like and even the real jockey who rode Mine That Bird. Most of the actual characters get cameo's somewhere in the film and the actors who were chosen to portray them do a great job. I am a big fan of Christian Kane and love him in this movie as it's close to his Texas cowboy persona. The rest of the actors Skeet Ulrich, William Devane and all the others do a great job too. It's not a huge cast so all the characters develop through the film and it was only shot on a comparatively low budget of about $8.5 million so given that the scope of the movie is amazing. Good fun and entertainment for all.
Bob Rutzel This is based upon a true storyA bar fight is the catalyst for horse owner Mark Allen (Kane) and horse trainer Chip Woolley (Ulrich) to become life long friends. Chip encourages Mark to purchase Mine That Bird, a small horse that walks funny. The only reason to see this film is to watch the race at the end. Pro Jockey Calvin Borel rides Mine That Bird to a Kentucky Derby win. It is there you will want to stand up and cheer even though you know the outcome. It is quite a race. The back-story to all this is sketchy; the acting, dialogues, and direction are suspect in places, with no real development at all. All is sketchy and one has to assume things. Many things went wrong before the Derby race and they were sketchy as well, but you get the point and maybe that's enough. I kept getting the feeling that Continuity was not in play. Like I said "sketchy." However, to be fair, when the scenes are at Louisville, the acting, dialogues and direction come together much better. What was lacking was more scenes with the horse. Chip comes across as mean tempered and rude to his female jockey Alex played by Madelyn Deutch. So if you want to see the movie and just watch the race at the end you will be ahead of the game. Calvin Borel's ride is amazing and saves this movie. Remember, it is a true story. (5/10)Violence: Yes. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Language: Small stuff and not much of it.
bridgem-59920 Finally got to watch 50 to 1! Oh my goodness...what an awesome movie! The story was wonderful. Nothing like rooting for the underdog because let's face it, most of us have been there. Christian Kane was fantastic as always. The range he shows in this movie is amazing. He can communicate so many emotions with just one simple look. His comedic timing is spot on. The entire cast was great but, Christian Kane just has this ability to show a wide range of emotions in anything he is in. The chemistry between all the actors was so cohesive. You could truly believe that these folks had been working together with these horses for years. And nothing starts a movie quite like a good old bar fight! Will watch again and again!!
jhembrook529 I rented 50 to 1 from Redbox because I wanted to see it first before I bought it to be sure I'd like it. Well, I loved it! I loved the acting by all in the film especially Skeet Ulrich and Christian Kane! I fell in love with Mine that Bird from the beginning of watching him and seeing the actual jockey, Calvin Borel, ride at the end of the movie was amazing! He knew exactly how to ride the horse to save his energy for the end to win the race. Even knowing how it ended didn't take away from the excitement of seeing it happen. The movie was very well done and I intend to buy it as soon as I am able. My daughter is 9 and a horse lover and I think she would very much enjoy watching this movie as well!
