jezziebezzie I'm so glad I waited until a couple of years after Williams passed to watch this. I love nothing more than to DVR a couple of sappy Holiday Movies in the time between US Thanksgiving & Christmas Eve. Williams, Candice Bergin, Joel McHale, Lauren Graham, Clark Duke, Wendy McLendon-Covey & Oliver Platt? It took 0 convincing to queue this one up. It's 88 minutes of grumbling & groaning & whining & unfunny. I'm not sure how it's even POSSIBLE to make an UNFUNNY movie with that cast. Although the movie is so oddly disjointed (are the kids sleeping or awake? When did they go to bed & who put them there?), it's obvious they person in the editing bay had no clue what they were doing. Also, no disrespect to lovely actresses, but WHEN was this movie actually made? I've seen movies several years ago with both McLendon-Covey & Especially Bergen looking MUCH more ... "Experienced?" "Distinguished?" Darn, what's the correct (polite) word for a woman? It almost feels like this movie had been shelved (for good reasons) and then perhaps was 'dredged' up when Williams passed away. Sad. Sad. Sad.
tomjackson-65632 A very enjoyable holiday film with great casting. It did remind me of a TV movie, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A man, played by Joel McHale, who suffered through an alcoholic father and less than great holidays, is determined to make his son's holidays as terrific as possible. He also wants his son to believe in Santa for as long as possible. After they make the long drive to his parent's home for Christmas, the parents realize they've left the son's gifts all back at their house. So McHale decides to drive back home overnight and get the gifts, so that his son can still believe in Santa Claus. When his car dies, he's forced to make the drive with his father. I'm sure you can guess how it all ends up, but it was still fun and charming, with a few laugh out loud moments. The end is very cute and just what you'd want in a holiday film.
jfarms1956 The move "A Merry Friggin' Christmas" attempts to be funny but the humor isn't cute, it is almost sick. It is not a movie for the children. It is for adults only because only the adults can appreciate the humor. I do like Robin Williams and Candice Bergen, but not in this movie. This movie left me feeling really flat. Most Christmas movies make me feel good in the end, but with this one -- I'm just glad the movie ended. I guess I should have given it one star, but with Robin Williams, it does have some redeeming grace. One should spend their time elsewhere or doing something else. This movie might appeal to the 20 year old dope heads. This movie reminds me of how Beavis and Butthead might do Christmas.
leonblackwood Review: This is one of those "Made For TV" movies which you will see around Christmas time. I didn't really find it that funny or slightly interesting but the moral behind the story is good for kids who still believe in Father Christmas. The storyline, which is about a father whose been brought up by a drunken dad, played by Robin Williams, who taught him not to believe in Father Christmas, is pretty weak and the characters weren't that great. When the main character forgets to bring his child's Christmas presents to his parents house, it turns into a road movie because he decides to travel back to his house with his dad and his brother. From there, I thought that the movie might get interesting but the main character keeps on moaning about his bad upbringing and his rocky relationship with his father. I was also hoping that Robin Williams would save the day with his witty humour and crazy one liners but I could see that he wasn't being his normal self. Personally, I got bored after a while and I think the director lost his chance to get the best out of a comedic genius. Disappointing!Round-Up: Every now and again I see actors/actresses play a role which, you can tell, there not enjoying playing. This is the case with Robin Williams in this film who seemed distant and zoned out throughout the film. There was plenty of opportunities for the director to bring out the best of Williams but he seemed to concentrate on the weak main character who got on my nerves after a while. He has been in movies like Ted and Spiderman 2 but I personally can't remember him. As this is one of Robin Williams last films, I'm sure that people will watch this movie because of that point, but he won't be remembered for it. On the plus side, it is short which means that it doesn't drag or become unwatchable.I recommend this movie to people who are into their Happy Christmas movies about a man trying to make Christmas special for his son after being brought up by his father, not to believe in the family tradition. 2/10
