Paul Magne Haakonsen Well, first of all I must start by saying that this movie is definitely not for the faint hearted - pardon the pun. This movie is high on stress factor and it will hit you hard. I have watched a lot of movies in my life, but no movie has made me cringe as "Awake" did when Clay is awake when the surgeon opens up his chest. The storyline in "Awake" is interesting, although I had initially thought it would suck as much as "Buried" did, given the somewhat similarities in concept. But luckily "Awake" turned out to be much more interesting and entertaining.Clay (played by Hayden Christensen) has a weak heart and is to undergo a heart transplant. But the anesthetic doesn't fully work as intended and Clay lies conscious during the procedure. But things are not as Clay thought they were, and trapped in anesthetic limbo the truth dawns on him.The thing with Clay getting up and walking around and following the events prior to and after the procedure was a bit too far out there for my liking. As for the acting, well, while the acting was good and really added to the movie, I will say that it was Jessica Alba who stood out in the movie and carried it. And while Hayden Christensen did an okay job, he will forever be trapped in the role of an angry young sith, and I was just waiting for him to bring out a light saber. So, personally, I don't think that Hayden Christensen was the best of choices casting-wise.The movie started out okay and was good up to the point on the surgery table, where Clay "woke up". From thereon the storyline took a nosedive for the worse. And it was a shame because the movie had potential.
tomsview Stylish and full of surprises, this is one of those movies that make you wonder how people come up with such clever ideas. In this case it is writer/director Joby Harold, and amazingly it looks like this is the only film he has directed so far. Don't pay too much attention to the negative reviews – if this film didn't impress the critics at the time it was released, I don't know what would. The best thing if you haven't seen "Awake" is not to read too much about it beforehand, just let it play and enjoy the surprises as they come.Without giving too much away, the film starts with some ominous statistics, which fade in and out over Graeme Revell's seductive, yet unsettling score. The statistics state that out of 21 million people who receive general anaesthetic each year, 30,000 suffer from anaesthesia awareness – they remain awake, totally paralysed, but are aware of everything. Clay Beresford (Hayden Christensen), a wealthy young man, undergoes a heart transplant. His friend, surgeon Jack Harper (Terrence Howard), performs the operation over the objections of Clay's mother, Lilith (Lena Olin). Just before the operation, and also without his mother's blessing, Clay marries Sam Lockwood (Jessica Alba), his mother's assistant. When the operation commences, Clay discovers that he is one of the unlucky 30,000; he has anaesthesia awareness big time, and to paraphrase a blurb from another movie, 'under anaesthetic, no one can hear you scream'.From that point on, the film goes in unexpected directions. It's a delicious mystery with revelation after revelation.I love the cast although apparently very few of them were the first choice. Lena Olin is just one of those ageless European beauties who hardly has to do anything to get your attention. Jessica Alba is so gorgeous you can't help thinking she was born to make movies; although some are so bad she is about the only reason to watch them. However, that is not the case here, this is a meaty role with quite a few layers to her character. As for Jessica receiving a "Rassie" Worst Actress nomination for her role in "Awake", it's as silly as the fact that she and Hayden Christensen were also nominated for Worst Couple, showing that the "Rassie" panel missed the point entirely as to the meaning of the word couple as it applies to this movie.Apparently the authenticity of some of the procedures shown in "Awake" have been called into question, as have the statistics shown at the beginning of the movie, but I don't think that detracts from the enjoyment of the film; it is definitely one of a kind. If you like a movie with a fresh twist, "Awake" won't disappoint you.
brendon faife There is never a dull moment through out the entire movie... When we first meet the various characters in the movie we quickly form first impressions of them...a young couple in love, a dominant mother not wanting to let go of her son, a friend you can trust, and then halfway through realize that oh boy...were we wrong or what?! I had goosebumps when the protagonists heart is cut open and he could still feel and hear the doctors!!! A part of me hopes that this never happens to someone i love!!! Love makes the world go around. And yes, money too :( The story centers around a business tycoon ,Clayton, who has to undergo a heart transplant. But due "anesthetic awareness" he is awake and can feel and hear the doctors during the surgery. But what is more painful....feeling or hearing? Watch it!!
JimTheGreek7 Though the concept seemed interesting at first, I came to realize that this movie was not made for people with intelligent higher than that of a fourteen year old's. The holes in the plot were too big to ignore, the acting was terrible and the lines in the script laughable to say the least. I mean they can't be serious if they want us to believe that a billionaire would prefer to have his heart surgery performed by a mediocre heart surgeon in a public hospital, lacking in both equipment and staff instead of having the best surgeon there is, just because he knew the doctor for a year or so and thought of him as a friend. Also, no doctor in the world would agree to kill a patient while having 4 malpractice suits against him even if he could gain money out of it. Also, the only thing that having the protagonist awake during the surgery serves (except for the title), is in order to spend time in some flashbacks and make the movie a little longer since they didn't have anything better to show us.And that's because even if he wasn't awake during the surgery the ending would still be the same... Finally, in the end the only thing that matters according to the surgeon is that now Cley is awake and not of course that he lived! This might be one of the worst ending lines I've ever heard! And these are just some of the many flaws this movie has.Though it is not one of the worst movies I've ever seen, I wouldn't even consider watching it again. So, all facts considered, I believe that the best thing about this movie is that it only lasted 84 minutes
