armoredtanker What can one say about a movie that even Gen. Omar Bradley refused to endorse. Simply awful.Any student of history will see how awful this movie is. First the tanks. Okay so there were no King Tigers, except for 3, left in the world. So you had to borrow M47 Pattons from Spain. The M24s used as Sherman okay guess they were to lazy to locate some. The Battle at the beginning in the forest, snow? There was none during the start of the attack. The Battle for the town. Using tanks to shell the town. That was dumb. Where is the German Artillery. They amassed large amounts for the attack. Germans would not waste time in attacking a town that tanks should bypass and leave to the follow up infantry. The final battle in the desert, yes desert, was so pathetic. By the time the Germans had reached the Meuse area the weather was horrible. Cold and snow, plus fog had descended on the battle. The tank column led by Col. Hessler was supposed to either represent the column led by Col. Peiper, SS, or the 2nd Panzer that was stopped at Celles by the US 2nd Armored. One part that bugged me was the Corp Commander, Robert Ryan asking for 155mm guns. Every US Infantry Division had a battalion of 155s. A US Corp would have several independent artillery battalions as well. Well for the most part I can watch this movie with the bad over the top acting. And the British Eighth Army was in Italy not north of the 1st US Army in Belgium. That was the 2nd Army UK.
Kirpianuscus far to be easy to write something reasonable about it. for the fans of war films, it is a must see. for the admirers of actors - a good stone for define the filmography. for the admirers of the films from the 6-7 decades, it is a film under each expectation. because it represents only a meet of cast, sketches of characters, the story as pretext for dialogues and humor not real inspired. a film who gives the portrait of brave American soldier only as an unfinished drawing. sure, this is an option. but, maybe, not the most inspired.
denis888 I never watched this epic drama before, though I am a big fan for WWII movies, and this one seemed to be a promising thing with so many great actors in and with a grand plot in mind. Yes, to depict a famous Battle Of The BUlge of 1944, to show so many fine men and portray heroism, decency as well as cowardice and treason. Did it work? No, never. What makes this movie even a bigger flop is a mere fact that there are many excellent German and US actors who played admirably awesome parts in such masterpieces as The LOngest Day or Bridge Too Far. Here, it seemed they are all joking. Add a sad fact of extremely poorly executed blue screen imposing frames and very childishly orchestrated battle scenes and you are up for a bunch of shrugged shoulders and uncontrollable laughs. It also felt like all actors were not for real, the sheer amateurism of certain dialogues added to a greater misery. So, what went wrong? Everything - pace, setting, camera work, performances, light, battles, music, tonality. Ah, and why on Earth Germans speak both German and English to each other? Rating - 1, that is very very awful
wes-connors It's December 1944 and World War II will soon end. Not this film, however; after what feels like three hours, we get an intermission. You're more than half way to the finish line, though. British and American forces are on the threshold of victory, but Germany still hopes to turn things around. They've got some fine new equipment. Faster jet planes, deadly rockets and rougher, tougher "tiger" tanks are going to help the Axis defeat the Allies, they hope. Robert Shaw (as Hessler) is determined. But the Germans are unable to get the petrol (fuel) needed to run their war machine. So, it looks like German Chancellor Adolf Hitler and the Nazis will lose the war, as expected...The "Battle of the Bulge" has some big names in the cast, with some potential for interesting relationships. They get lost in a ponderous, overblown spectacle. Since we know the outcome, the story should be about how the characters relate to the war and each other. They have a few moments, but not even Henry Fonda is able to create a convincing character. Nicely seasoned Robert Ryan and big mustached Dana Andrews have little to do, but James MacArthur and Telly Savalas see some action. "Bulge" uses the wide-screen fully, but to no great effect until the explosive ending. This is when several of the characters come together and we become interested in them, finally.***** Battle of the Bulge (12/16/65) Ken Annakin ~ Robert Shaw, Telly Savalas, James MacArthur, Henry Fonda
