stancym-1 "This dog just does not hunt." Not just that it is contrived and unbelievable in places.....the characters are not believable, none of them. Clark Gable is aging and looks and sounds totally American. Not at all like a Dutch intelligence officer who's still on his game. Lana Turner sounds American though she too is supposed to be Dutch. In her case, we are supposed to believe that being stuck in hiding for days in a windmill with no amenities or frills, or trekking through rough countryside, she still has perfectly coiffed hair and red lipstick that never wears off even a little, the entire time. And then we have the third lead, Victor Mature, also sounding very American. At least Wilfred Hyde White and Louis Calhern and the wonderful, not well known Ian Carmichael sound British and are supposed to be, in the film. I just think having all three leads being so apple pie American pretending to be Dutch who have never set foot in America, is too much to impose on the viewer's "suspension of disbelief." Victor Mature's character development (want to avoid spoilers) that affects the plot heavily also seems "a bridge too far." Many, many better spy films out there!
Desertman84 Betrayed is an exciting espionage thriller set during World War II.It stars Lana Turner, Victor Mature and Clark Gable together with Louis Calhern, O. E. Hasse, Wilfrid Hyde-White, Ian Carmichael, Niall MacGinnis and Theodore Bikel. It was written by by Ronald Millar and George Froeschel.Gottfried Reinhardt directed the film.Intelligence agent Pieter Deventer is ordered to keep tabs on suspected Nazi collaborator Fran Seelers. Both join the Dutch underground, making contact with a flamboyant resistance leader known as "The Scarf". Seelers poses as a sexy chanteuse, the better to gain the confidence of the lascivious Nazi officers. Within the next few weeks, several underground operatives are captured and shot, and it begins to look as though Deventer's suspicions concerning Seeles are correct. However, the real collaborator happens to be a surprise as it was revealed some twenty minutes before the end of the film.Despite the fact that it is dated, the suspense level is expertly maintained all throughout the film which makes it exciting. Also, the performances are good from Gable,Turner and Mature. Also, the beautiful sceneries of Netherlands contributes a lot to the cinematography of the film.
max843 Picture would have been better with the original casting - Gregory Peck, Richard Widmark and Ava Gardner - although Gable is quite believable.Scenery and locations are great, and add a lot to the film. I wish there were more languages spoken, with sub-titles or perhaps a fade to English after the nationality has been determined. Is any of this based on a true story? And it seems that if this was filmed just nine years after the end of the war, there would be more bombing ruins. I know when we lived in England and travelled throughout Europe during 1964 and 1965, we still saw signs of the destruction everywhere. Especially in the small villages and countryside.Strange to say, West Germany looked the most recovered and the young soldiers I spoke with in the huge Munich Biergärten said, "Just wait, we will all be one Germany again soon."
dbdumonteil As a war movie,"betrayed" leaves a lot to be desired and Victor Mature as a Dutch is perhaps not the right choice.Actually the film is more a whodunit than a film about the resistant fighters in Netherlands and their relations with their allies in London. The main question is:which of the two suspects, the gorgeous spy with a racy past (Lana turner) or the local hero "the scarf"(Mature) is betraying his/her comrades?Clark Gable becomes some kind of Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot :finally the identity of the traitor makes sense.Another flaw is the weakness of the supporting characters:we would like to know more about the young hero and his grandma, about the Scarf's brother and mother .We do not feel the humiliation of the occupied country except for the short scene when the young resistant is asked by the music teacher to remove the picture of Queen Wilhemine .Like this? try these....."the counterfeit traitor" George Seaton "the two-headed spy" Andre de Toth
