Coventry "Black Rock" is a forgettable, derivative and largely insignificant little piece of survival horror/thriller, but it's not entirely hopeless and definitely better than most of my fellow reviewers around here claim it to be. Some of the things I read were undeservedly harsh and overly mean, especially taken into consideration that the film is never boring and contains at least a few good aspects (like adequate performances and one or two surprise twists). The basic plot is formulaic as can be, with a trio of girlfriends heading out to the island where they spent their childhood vacations together. But the times and their lives have changed tremendously, since Sarah – the blonde – attempts to resuscitate the friendship between Abby and Lou, as Lou slept with Abby's fiancée a few years ago. They run into three much younger hunters on the island, and Abby desperately feels the need to prove that she can still seduce boys. The evening ends with attempted rape and the accidental death of one of the hunters, but the remaining two want vengeance. "Black Rock" is the love-child of married couple Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton. He wrote and produced the film, while she directs and depicts one of the lead characters. Isn't that romantic? The good news is that the female characters are identifiable and realistic. They're whiny and pretty insufferable most of the time, but at least they aren't your everyday slasher stereotypes. The hunters are supposedly former Iraq soldiers, dishonorably discharged atop, but don't expect them to be mentally disturbing psychos like the Vietnam veterans in exploitation movies from the 70's. They're rather dull and spineless weaklings that can't even ambush a couple of quarreling city chicks. The film doesn't make optimal use of its remote island location and the violence is disappointingly tame. On the other hand I have to admit that, contrary to other films of its type, the deaths come as a surprise and the final shot is marvelously atmospheric.
DGKRocks This film really isn't bad or anything, it just wasn't done properly. The choice of the 3 lead actresses were very good in my opinion, and the main antagonist was good as well, and I really liked how they made him look like a psycho. Now the one thing was the death of Kate Bosworth in the film. (I'd prefer if she didn't die but that's another story) I believe her death wasn't good, or dramatic enough. They should have at least made it dramatic and not just forget about her. Now that that's out of the way, if you watch the trailer, then you've basically seen the move in a few short minutes. The trailer gives away too much, by seeing the trailer, you can pretty much just figure out all the things you haven't seen, which are basically just extra, and the movie was pretty predictable as well.
Sherazade I mean I don't want to knock this low budget thriller but it was very poorly written, poorly acted, poorly edited, poorly shot and unnecessarily vulgar. So three childhood girlfriends meet again as adults and decide to take a trip to a deserted island known as 'Black Rock' a place they visited as kids and had buried a time capsule there. The minute one of them deems cancer a disease funny enough to joke about, you can pretty much guess where this is heading. Upon reaching the island an underlying rift between two of the friends surfaces and causes them to deviate from their main quest which was to unearth the time capsule. While the two squabbling friends sort things out, they discover that they are not alone on the seemingly uninhabited island and what ensues following this discovery is a series of catastrophic events that alters the lives of these three women forever. Kate Bosworth co-stars but please don't waste your time on this crappy movie.
Ed-Shullivan My first clue that this was not going to be a good film was after reviewing the credits to see Katie Aselton, was the writer, director and star of the film. Trust me, Katie Aselton is no Sylvester Stallone who pulled off a daily double by writing and starring in the Academy Award Best Bicture of 1976, Rocky. Heck even Sylvester had enough common sense to not try and direct himself in a feature film at such a young age. I found the whole premise of the film (three childhood friends trying to relive their childhood fun days and put aside their differences from their teenage days and boyfriend triangle love affairs) to be so predictable and oh so boring. Oh yes, and of course three army rejects just happen to be hunting for wildlife on the island and since they cannot find any animals they decide to hunt the girls. Duhh!Early in the film when the girls first land on Black Rock island they start to squabble, and I just cannot believe that Katie Aselton who was the main focus of this scene wouldn't use her directors chair to yell out "CUT". The squabbling went on for what seemed was an eternity. I found it so irritating. The three male companions who were army rejects had no chance to develop any character of their own, Director Katie just seemed to use their presence as the cliché good versus evil theme, and again I was kind of rooting that the guys would win so the women would just stop arguing amongst themselves. If you like a good wilderness adventure try and see Burt Reynolds in Deliverance. It is kind of the same premise, which is one group of people are the hunters, and the other group are the hunted.I found no value, no character development in this film and certainly no suspense was evident. I gave it a 1 out of 10 and suggest you pass on this boring and self serving Katie Aselton writer, director, actor not even good enough for a made for TV movie.
