Simone Navarotti I would call this a well-told story about how a person falls apart. Honestly there wasn't one single character in the story whom I honestly liked. They were all broken people with their own unique ways of being broken. But each character was so honestly drawn that it was easy to appreciate the brutal honesty of the portrayal. These were not perfect people gathered together to feed us a fantasy. There wasn't one caricature antagonist versus one superhero protagonist. I think most filmgoers have outgrown that kind of film,--I know I have. Instead what Allen managed to create was multiple beautifully intimate, highly detailed, realistic "peeks" into lives ranging from diamond-encrusted socialites to clam-munching "grease monkey." The one thing they all have in common: Boy, do they like to drink! I'll admit there's a sadistic entertainment to watching people make horrible decisions over and over again, completely destroying their lives,--and the lives of other people. Most of the characters were liars who were thoroughly selfish, which also made the film VERY true to life. It's not a comedy. I wouldn't even call it a so-called "dramedy." I suppose you could call it a modern-day moral tale that is not at all preachy or full of propaganda. It's a well-directed, compelling, solid film that proves highly engaging. By the end I did feel a little sorry for the main character. Though she was thoroughly unlikable, the poor dear, just had to deal with way too much.
xhidden99 Why? It's hard to know if Woody is being satiric, being self referential, satiric about being self referential, self loathing, ironic about being ironic or just dreadfully so seriously self absorbed that it takes itself seriously. Maybe a little of all of that. I will say this; it's got the standard Woody check boxes; overbearing 90 year old jazz soundtrack, too much dialog, absurd ethnic stereotypes and a plot that goes nowhere.
myNamJef Blue Jasmine is a fine movie which gives us a sobering look at the life of a high-society woman thrown back into 'normal life'. There are no clichès or gimmicks here, just very realistic dialogue that centers around the base of what our human nature often pushes us to do. This movie let's us view the competing ideas of happy life relative to different people's experience.
ComedyFan2010 It is not surprising considering who is the director, but the movie is very masterfully done. It shows disturbing life situation, broken people, makes one think. The highlight of it all is Cate Blanchette's acting. I don't know if she got any awards for this movie but I surely hope so. She showed the deep character of Jasmine. She is not one of the people one wants to have in one's life but one gets her pain and can sympathize. She sure is a snob, she thinks she can get what she wants when trying, but she also is a snob not seeing that people who are different aren't necessarily bad and losers. Add to this her nervous breakdown and we have an amazing character. The rest also adds a lot to the film. It is hard not to love Ginger (Sally Hawkins) and her choice in man actually seems to be healthier no matter how poor they are. Bobby Cannavale is a perfect Chili who we are happy she ends up with. Having his bad sides he is still a decent guy who loves Ginger and isn't just using her. His happy character is also a great contrast to snobs.Nice to see Andrew Dice Clay and Louis C. K. being outside their usual comedy selves and they do a great job. Especially Andrew Dice Clay. Alec Baldwin doesn't get the chance to show all his talents but we still see what kind of a man he is supposed to portray.
