KristenStewartForever This movie is very very very good. It's a wonderful film. But is NOT the real story of what happened to Brandon Teena.Director Kimberly Pierce did not care about Brandon's story. All she cared about was making money. So she turned Brandon's story into a Romeo & Juliet story when that was not true. Lana was right. It is a second murder of Brandon.People need to understand Brandon's life was not a tragic love story. It was a tragic life period. Lana was not his soulmate. She was not his true love. She only knew him for two weeks. And she betrayed him. She set him up to be raped. And she was not there the night he was murdered. Lana is Just as guilty as the murderers.Again, all Pierce cared about was making the bucks. She should've told the REAL story. The real truth.
pensacolacomputer Sorry, but this review is going to be a little haphazard. It also might contain a couple of spoilers! Its been a while since I've seen this movie. Today is December 4, 2017, I just watched the two hour documentary on YouTube from 1998. I am crying as I write this as it brings back memories of seeing the film in 1999. I feel such a connection to Brandon Teena, I am gay as well, except I was born a boy...when he was not...but he should have been. The Police officers involved needed to be punished and tried as well. The officer who interviewed Brandon should be in jail for murder for not arresting John and Tom for raping Brandon. And for the way he conducted the interview. If you haven't seen the real interview, it will probably blow your mind in disgust. There are a few positive things that came out of this tragedy. It brought much needed attention to gay rights, gay bashing, and transgender rights.I just read a couple of other reviews on here. I can see things haven't really changed that much from 1993 when this story took place. Sad. May God have mercy on your souls for such hate.If you haven't seen the movie, stop what you are doing and go watch it. It is a MUST SEE for any decent human being. You will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN BRANDON TEENA, your legacy will live on forever. Rest in peace friend.
Spikeopath It's one of those films that any film lover has to see to judge for themselves. A critical darling and an award winner, it's a film of undoubted emotional power. It is based on the tragic case of Teena Brandon (Hilary Swank) who was raped and murdered in 1993, it would become one of the significant cases of hate crime in American history. From the off Kimberly Peirce's film sets out its stall that we are in bleak territory, and so it proves. It dangles little shards of light, but constantly it proves uncompromising and unpleasant. There's a nagging irk that main characters are very thinly drawn, where motives are given short shrift, and this is bizarre given that the pic runs for nearly two hours. However, the performances of both Swank and Chloë Sevigny are outstanding, and Peirce handles the darkest scenes in the movie with a grace and tact that deserves applause. A tale that needed to be told, even in truncated form, Boys Don't Cry is fine cinema making. 8/10
freemantle_uk Boys Don't Cry is a brutal, hard hitting drama about the tragic story of Brandon Teena (Hilary Swank), a young woman with gender identity disorder and aims to live her life as a man. With a history of juvenile delinquency and social rejection from a homophobic, ill-informed community Brandon finds acceptance in Fall City, Nebraska, finding friends with a group and even love with Lana Tisdel (Chloe Sevigny). But when Brandon's secret is discovery it leads to rejection, violence, rape and murder.Boys Don't Cry is an extremely well acted, well directed film, particularly from Swank and Sevigny who had very tough roles. Director Kimberly Peirce gives Boys Don't Cry a very tight, claustrophobic feel with her close direction in small settings and she does not shy away with the brutality when showing the violence and the horrific rape scene.Boys Don't Cry is a very raw, powerful film and a fine example of American independent filmmaking as we get a film about acceptance, love and prejudice.
