TheNameBrand Ya know I grew up reading those books and they were a good time. And this movie was actually a surprisingly good time. Everything about it is an omage to those old books, and it just took me back. For a kids movie I found myself entertained between the toilet jokes, and I liked how they made some bold choices with the animation, and the story telling, just to make sure that it was an accurate representation of the source material.

invisibleunicornninja The only reason I went to see this movie in theaters was because my little brother dragged me along with him. I was looking forward to hating this movie and complaining about it afterwards. Instead, I found myself sticking around to watch the end credits scene. Humor - If you ignore all the potty humor (the established audience is immature little kids, the title character is "Captain Underpants," the main characters are elementary-school boys, and it was produced by Dreamworks - of course there's going to be tons of potty humor) its actually pretty funny. This movie is full of sight gags, meta humor, and absurdist concepts. I was laughing at pretty much every joke that didn't involve some kind of bodily fluids. This movie actually gets pretty creative in the humor department. Logic - One thing that I especially liked about this movie is how consistent it is. No matter how crazy it gets, none of the established rules are broken. There aren't plot holes. Some suspension of disbelief is required, but this movie sticks to its own logic pretty closely. Plot - This plot is simple and coherent. Its funny and overall quite enjoyable.Animation - This movie clearly had a high budget. The animation is done incredibly well. These stylized characters are brought to life with amazingly detailed simplicity. There is a lot of continuity, and everything looks great. There are several sequences with other forms of animation such as puppets, and they are all hilarious. The art department did a good job. Audio - The only thing that really bugged me about the sound of this thing was that the main characters sounded older than they are. Its not necessarily a bad thing as the voice acting is otherwise very good, but it kinda reminds you that these characters are being voiced by some adults in a recording room. Villan - A lot of times the villain sucks in superhero movies. This was not necessarily the case here. Though the villain's motivation was a bit simple and cartoonish - he is a cartoon. His plotline is easy to follow, and funny. He's an enjoyable villain. The Message - This movie actually has a bit of a message (I think). That message is that American public schools are underfunded and crappy. There are jokes about this messed up system all throughout the movie, adding to the hilarity. I don't know if this was really the message but its just an obvious aspect that I noticed and thought was especially funny.Overall this movie was hilarious. There are a few jokes that are clearly inspired by other movies, but you know what? That's fine. What matters is that overall this movie is funny and coherent. This film is worth watching if you like stupid cartoons and a good laugh. There is a fair amount of cringeworthy potty humor. If there was less of that I'd probably give this movie more stars. If you're easily annoyed by jokes about peeing in your pajamas then probably skip this movie, but know that you'll be missing out on a lot of actual jokes.

teleconman If you had to pick a movie that you think is the ultimate kid's movie, would you pick this? I probably would. CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS was a surprise to me. I remember the books being popular in elementary school. I have seen what a CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS book contains. So to see it transported to the big screen would be a challenge. At first, I didn't like that casting of Kevin Hart and Thomas Middletech portraying the two main boys. I would have loved to have heard actual boys play the characters. But as the film went on it didn't bother me as much. I think they did a good job. They play George and Harold, two pranksters that get on the principal's nerves. So from the start we know that these two are real best friends. They also enjoy making comics, with their magnum opus being Captain Underpants. So with the power of a hypno-ring they are able to hypnotize their principal to become Captain Underpants himself. So you can tell that there was going to be a lot of toilet jokes through out. And you know what I liked it. It fits perfectly with the story and at the same time stays true to the source. My favorite part where I completely lost my head laughing would be the Fart concert. What's not to laugh about it. I also liked that the two boys had super imaginations and they showed how they perceived every situation in their heads. It sounds like the movie was about them even though the title is called Captain Underpants. I think this is a great adaptation of the books. Not a lot of studios can pull it off and some how Dreamworks Animation manged to do it.

TheLittleSongbird The books are generally fun and immensely charming, predominantly they are child-friendly but there is no real reason why adults would dismiss them, due to the lively characters, nice messaging, humour and heart.Saw 'Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie' as a huge fan of animation and to see how it stacked up with the books. There was a little trepidation too, because it sounded childish and the humour is usually not my kind of humour and often done badly. Seeing 'Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie', there are certainly far better animated films out there but also far worse. Was scared as to whether it would be pants, but after seeing it it is a long way from that though it falls short of being epic.'Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie' is a little too hectic at times in terms of the pacing. More could have been done with the villain.Out of a host of characters that generally fairly thin in development, he in particular did seem under-explored and not much more than a standard more humorous than expected villain, he also seemed a little too abruptly introduced.However, the animation is very bright and colourful, with lots of rich detail and clever character designs. The music is infectious in its energy and it works with the action rather than against it. There is generally a very nice lively energy to the story, apart from a tendency to be too hectic.Amazingly, the humour worked surprisingly well. Surprisingly seeing as it really isn't my kind of humour at all and something that should have come over in a childish fashion. It is incredibly silly but also remarkably funny, with the jokes and writing coming thick and fast. The potty-themed slapstick will delight children while adults are likely to find themselves laughing out loud at the knowing verbal wit.The messaging makes its point without being preachy. Despite them not being the best development, the characters are thankfully more engaging than they are annoying. Voice actors that one expects to not fit and sound completely wrong in their parts actually work perfectly and sound like they're enjoying themselves, Nick Kroll in particular.In conclusion, surprisingly enjoyable if not perfect. 7/10 Bethany Cox
