SnoopyStyle Connie (Nia Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette) are life long friends who're following lives in show business no matter how pathetic. When they witness a mob hit, they run away to LA. They fall in as drag queens working in a night club. Jeff (David Duchovny) is a neighbor who falls for Connie but gets confused about her/his cross dressing. From the first moments when the kid versions of Connie and Carla are doing Oklahoma, I have the same reaction as those kids in the cafeteria. They annoyed me. The Victor Victoria idea has its moments but it doesn't last. It never rise to the level of an actual laugh. Although poking at Connie's boobs comes close to a laugh. And awkward Jeff is very cute. I think the problem has to be the lack of a comedian in the three leads. The timing and the pacing is off. They're relatively likable actors. The romance comes a bit late, and the comedy isn't built to have big laughs.
Erin (lotr_freak514) This movie was literally the most fun I've had watching a movie in a long time! It's refreshingly different from the mainstream and made me smile, laugh out loud, and sit on the edge of my seat. Nia Vardalos is brilliant! The script is great with lots of little jokes and inside jokes, and once you discover them you will laugh even harder at a moment which was already funny. But, other than writing a great script, Nia Vardalos(Connie) and Toni Colette(Carla) did a fantastic job of acting their corny, cute characters. Another great asset to the movie was the great chemistry between Vardalos and David Duchovny. I loved this movie, and hope that you too will enjoy this spunky story of two women pretending to be men pretending to be women.
waterwolfie This movie is hilarious! Sure it's corny... but I haven't seen a stage show yet that wasn't. The over-blown drama is exactly the way it is in plays, musicals, and dinner theatre. Without the big drama... it's just another movie taking up shelf space at your local video store.Adjusting to the concept of drag queens was strange at first, but by the end of the movie you actually develop an understanding of and insight into why they are who they are and why they do what they do. In the movie they refer to it as an 'art form of being true to one's self' ...and even I can relate to that. The best-friend relationship between Connie and Carla really carries the movie, not to mention all the different characters and the facial expressions they use. The characters also show growing pains along with their growth, which stays true to the drama of Broadway shows. This movie is about two girls having a dream, and overcoming the obstacles of realizing that dream. It's obvious that these actors loved doing this movie and had fun while doing it. This movie has surprisingly become one of my favorite movies. Just watch it and give it a chance... you will adore it.
eastiveym Connie and Carla is a wonderful movie, about two girls that want to be famous. They work at an airport, and some gangsters come to talk to this guy that is letting them work there. Well, Connie and Carla go to warn him, when they witness these guys shooting poor Frank. So off they go, because these guys want to get them too, because of what they saw. Connie left her work bag back at the airport, which had their information in it about all the dinner theaters all around the US. So they decide to go to LA, where there are NO dinner theaters. They find work at a salon type place, and when they help one girl look absolutely beautiful, they get fired. So they go to a bar to get drunk, and there dancing with these two guys, who are gay. Then, they find out they need drag queen acts, so Connie gets the bright idea to be drag queens! All goes well until Connie meets a guy she REALLY likes, but she cant say anything because first off, he has a girlfriend, and shes a "woman dressed as a man dressed as a woman" Thats when things go all wrong... and then Connie decides that the guy who owns the place should turn that little bar into a dinner theater, because the place gets so packed because of Connie and Carla's performances. Its a great movie, and thats all I'm gonna say, I'm not sure if this has spoilers or not, I just clicked the box
