msnbynum Watched it all the time as a kid. And just watched it again as an adult. Devon is an adorable kid.
FlashCallahan Devon Butler is an eight-year old who dreams of being a cop. He watches police TV shows, knows police procedures, and plays cops and robbers with his friend Ray. One day, while snooping around in a warehouse, he witnesses a murder. He goes to the police, who want the information, but he won't give it until they make him an honorary cop. The police then team him with veteran cop Nick McKenna, and the two team up to find the killer......The film is worth watching for one reason and one reason only. There is a point in the film near the end when the speedboat is about to do a stupid jump where you can actually see Burt Reynolds experience a moment of self realisation and know his career is at its lowest ebb.Obviously the film is trying to cash in on the success of Kindergarten Cop and action heroes in general trying to attempt comedy. But this veers past Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot in blatantly unfunny humour that doesn't know what demographic it's aiming for.Reynolds just coasts his way through the boredom, the unfunny set pieces, and lethargic action, and the opening scene of him chasing the bad guys across people's gardens doesn't bring in laughter like its intending to do, it gives you an instant disliking to his character. And it sticks right until the end.His character like no one, doesn't attempt to like anyone, and is borderline abusive toward Devon, and despite trying to be another cute child actor, Norman Golden the 3rd whatever is just another bad child actor who looks like he could have a little bit if an edge, but just ruins every scene he appears in.So all in all, it's not funny, the two titular characters have no chemistry whatsoever, the action is lethargic (but there is a funny bar fight where Reynolds beats everyone up), and it features one of the most disturbing scenes I've seen in a family film, involving a toilet, urine, and Devon wanting to 'cross the streams'.As bad as you've heard.
Erik Unknown This was one of my all time favorite movies as a kid.People seem to forget this film was intended to be aimed for kids, not for adults. While this story plot is just like all the others, kid can do impossible things, it's great for kids who are into action films, but are nowhere near ready to watch such films as Saving Private Ryan. The violence was kept to a minimum, and the comedic value was kept as high as it could be for an appropriate child's film. If you are going to rate this low, you've got some issues, especially if you're watching a child's film when your about 30.
Elswet It doesn't rate MUCH higher than that, but Norman D. Golden II is so preciously precocious as to wax reminiscent of Shirley Temple's early performances.Burt is great here, though his character is quite irascible and curmudgeonly, but he plays those parts very well. This film features some decent action, a story and plot line which is quite cliché, and some good elemental twists, which balance out the many clichés throughout. It was muddled in that you had to suspend belief to an extreme level in order to embrace the work, but once done, there is a lot of heart and entertainment to be had. I'm not saying this is "great" or even "compelling," but I did derive some level of enjoyment from Norman D. Golden II's performance. It rates a 5.2/10 from...the Fiend :.
