lilasalovaara From my point of view, the movie's point isn't to scare your ass off. Its point is to piece together horror, thriller and a little bit of comedy. Its point is to seem interesting and not to seem predictable - personally, i have so much valuation to films that doesn't have a simple idea. The films that gets you confused with their abnormal atmosphere. The films that leave you guessing and biting your nails.I think the characters are amazingly done - i mean, their lines make you laugh and each one of them expresses themselves differently. My favorite is the curly hair-guy who talks all the time, including sarcasm and humor in his talk. The others get just pissed off and tell him to shut up :D THAT IS SO FUNNY.I mean, they are stuck in the elevator and they have to stand each other in such a cramped pace and yet, for such a long time. If this doesn't impress you enough, at least watch this movie for Logan Marshall Green because his performance in his role is impressing. I remember him from The OC tv show, as Ryan Atwood's brother, Trey in the later seasons. This movie made me laugh, entertained, a little bit of skittish and very involved. I think it's amazingly and uniquely done. One of interesting things in the movie for me is to think that someone of those people in the elevator, is the devil! People died one at a time and it left you to question those who are still alive. It's like freaking detective game for you :DI just have to say, i'm proud i watched this movie. It made me feel entertained afterwards. Movies like this are one of the good reasons to stay alive.
eric262003 The year 2010 was not a great year for M. Night Shyamalan. It all started when when his over-profited film "The Last Airbender" was meant with negative feedback. One could only hope that the lesser budgeted film "Devil" can hope revitalize his decaying reputation. The first of his "Night Chronicles" franchise, but that was feared that the harsh critics would easily dismiss it. So Universal Pictures cleverly released in in theatres before they had a chance to chomp at it right away. It doesn't happen like this everyday, but "Devil" is an exception to that. The story focuses on five strangers trapped in an office elevator in Philadelphia. As the lift is at midway point, tension bursts in the air and the civilians isolated in the elevator develop a lot of mistrust in one another. The fear is that there is something else lurking around them which makes them prone to violent acts to the point where lives are taken from them. On the outside, through CCTV cameras, Detective Bowden (Chris Messina)a reformed alcoholic comes to the conclusion that the evil that's lurking isn't an act of nature, but The Devil or someone possessed by Satan. And the ruler of evil invited these civilians with no clear explanation.Due to the bad press given to Shyamalan for participating in this low-budgeted spectacular, the guys behind the lenses John Erick and Drew Dowdle the duo behind the appalling "Quarantine". To give them credits the Dowdles succeeded in using the most frugal resources by pitting five people in a generic setting like an elevator with 75 minutes saturated with heavy tension and paranoia among the victims stuck in one place. The film looks and has the feel more like a "Twilight Zone" integrity going for it thanks mainly to the script by Brian Nelson. The Dowdles succeed in doing everyone a favor by not making the Devil a scary being.Even though Shyamalan isn't directing or given penmanship for this movie, he does succeed in leaving his hand-prints all over it. It comes assembled with reactionary screenplays with performers coming to grips progressively with the situation they are facing and they have to absorb the nightmares that bestows upon them. The story divides between victims in a precarious situation and a befuddled detective trying to ascertain that a religious entity is just an eye-blink away. Though the Dowdles can't cram too much in a 75 minute parameter and using low-key effects to create a dire environment and enough to keep the horror film in all its PG-13 rating. I'm glad this movie's is doing everything to draw our own conclusions towards the unholy evil coming at us, but the scenes spell green screen everywhere. The off-camera yelps are heard in an omnipresent fashion. The score by Fernando Velazquez was quite electrifying as each sound was created the fear factor through every scene. Messina is also very impressive in his performance as a man of little faith challenging the supernatural entities that's coming for him and to reconsider his faith in the afterlife. It shouldn't come as a shocker that an unpredictable twist will be coming our way like the way Shyamalan delivers. And though Hollywood wants to restrain the integrity that Shyamalan provides, its the the sole purpose to why "Devil" can be a claustrophobic drag programmed to see the twist coming a mile away.
joshyates1980 The movie hit a scary side of me when I use my imagination and put myself in one of the individuals situation. First, I don't like tight spaces. Second, I don't like elevators with more than just me on it (I do walk 8 flights of stairs within the building I work at to my desk.) Third, include an evil spirit (or daddy evil himself) within the mix and to me, that equals a scary movie.I enjoyed the plot of the movie on how the individuals themselves all ended up on the elevator. As the movie reels, the viewer learns about each person's background on the elevator due to the assigned detective on the case. How did he end up on the case? Everything that happened in sequence was just how the devil planned. Good movie!
Ole Sandbaek Joergensen This is a tense little thriller/horror flick, some of the films M. Night Shamalan are involved with I like very much and others not so much. This one I like but it's not all the way up there on the scale, mainly because it could have been more, but it does okay. It's a strange flick not truly scary, but it kept me on the edge of my seat a couple of times, and it definitely keeps one guessing a lot of times. The scenery primarily takes place in one place or in one building, but it's interesting and even in small confined spaces you can have good acting, hidden/strange camera angles and good visual effects to set the right mood.
