rupakarumanchi At heart, Disconnect is drama film with the triggers being provided by modern day social issues such as cyber bullying, identity theft and online chat rooms. The movie starts off by tackling these issues by the way the sequence of events unfold. The storyline follows three threads - A high-school student falling prey to his peers who create a fake profile to mess with him, a journalist who forms a connection with an eighteen year old who performs on adult-only sites and a couple with a troubled past who have their identities stolen by a cyber criminal. What follows is pure drama-fest and does not leave much food for thought for tech enthusiasts except that mistrust of the internet is not a bad thing. From the perspective of a cinema enthusiast, Disconnect is a crisp, well-made film with stellar performances from the cast. The dialogue is simple and never gets too heavy or too light. The story line never gets boring and we do see some pieces of the separate threads come together smoothly reminiscent of movies such as Crash. We don't delve too deep into any of the characters but we empathise with each one of them. This says something about the right balance being struck in providing each character with just enough back story and dialogue. Any gaps in the writing could have only been exposed by bad acting but the cast delivers. Bateman, as always, gives a memorable performance and the child actors too play their roles convincingly. Fashion enthusiasts may recognise Marc Jacobs who plays the role of a pimp to perfection. Disconnect leaves you with the warm feeling of having seen a decent film but from the perspective of a tech enthusiast there is not much scope for thought except to never use your date of birth as your password and maybe research the stats on identity theft. Worth a watch but nothing special.
Ana Silva (Anaslair) This movie approaches a multitude of situations any of us could encounter in today's world. We often think tragedy only strikes others, so it is definitely food for thought.Disconnect addresses situations we are all aware of but probably don't pay much attention to, as they are outside our little bubble. The movie confronts you with those awful situations and asks you what you would do in those characters' situation. The directing was very good. I can tell there was a lot of thought put into the set according to each particular characters' situations and even filming each scene.Pretty much the only downsides I found were the couple dealing with the loss of their son – they felt like strangers well before that event, it's like the husband's military past did not even happen up to that point, for example -, and the FBI being so inefficient felt like a plot device to get things to where they needed to be for dramatic potential. Also, I had trouble dealing with the slow pace.It makes sense because there are several different stories happening at the same time and due to the reality of the situations. There are no car chases or big explosions here, this is real life. The stories reach their climax in slow motion scenes but I just could not feel the impact as expected, for some reason. I guess I found the build up to some of them either too slow or that it did not have enough background/development or I just wanted more.Still, Disconnect is a very heartbreaking, real movie. The ending was just as realistic and I believe it is something everyone should watch, from as young as teenagers.
ikinsman I don't often feel prompted to write a review of a film on IMDb but this film was so good that I felt I had to promote it to other film addicts like myself. It is one of those films that really reflect the situation of many people's lives at the time we are living in. Disconnect is a perfect title for summing up the main theme - how people are so wrapped up in what they do and the technology sucking them in that they tend to ignore those who are closest to them, often thinking that nothing is amiss, whereas there are often problems bubbling away beneath the surface. The most striking aspect of the film is the script that really makes it so powerful, which is accompanied by some excellent individual acting performances and very powerful directing. I think the writer and director represent two very promising talents to watch in the years to come.
Kitty Kat "Disconnect" is a techno-thriller directed by Henry Alex Rubin starring Jason Bateman, Alexander Skarsgård, Hope Davis, Paula Patton, Frank Grillo, Andrea Riseborough, Michael Nyqvist, Max Thieriot and Marc Jacobs (yes, Marc Jacobs as in the fashion designer). It's packed with a lot of drama, putting social media in the foreground and the problems that it can/has caused nowadays. The internet can connect - but sadly it can also disconnect, as we get to see in this drama. I'm not going to talk all professional with you, whoever you may be, because this film was just so powerful. I saw it maybe a month ago and I can't stop thinking about it. It makes me question everything I put on the internet, it makes me even a little paranoid when I look at my laptop (could someone be watching?), it makes me be more careful and I find myself looking at technology with a new distrust. It is thrilling, intense and so real. So, if you haven't already noticed I really like this film and i recommend it 100%. Jason Bateman's performance particularly stood out to me, as he captured the essence of this movie perfectly. He proved that he is on top of his game and I hope to see him pursue more dramatic roles in the future. The acting from the whole cast is great and the screenplay, lighting and filming only make it even more exciting. The story follows three separate groups of people, all of them having some kind of dilemma with social media. There is one Family, in particular a boy named Ben, a couple and a reporter trying to interview a video chat room stripper called Kyle. I'm not going to go into the story any further, it's better if you just jump right into the movie. All I'm going to say is that you should definitely watch this film. If you are thinking about it and wanted to read some reviews to be sure, what are you waiting for? Watch it! You won't be disappointed.
