Robert Jackson Forks Over Knives is a documentary film that advocates for a low- fat, whole-food, plant-based diet, arguing that eating plant-based foods and avoiding animal-based foods, can prevent or reverse serious health problems. There are many benefits to choosing this diet over a "western diet", a diet high in fat, sugar, processed foods, and meat. The healthy plant-based diet is high in vitamins and minerals and it won't raise your bad cholesterol. Unlike the fatty "western diet", this diet prevents the buildup of fat in arteries, which can cause cardiovascular disease. Despite it advocating healthier eating, Forks Over Knives is not without fault. The film argues against the consumption of animal-based foods, specifically targeting meat and dairy, even going as far as to suggest that animal-based foods have little to no nutritional benefit and should never be eaten. While eating too much meat is unhealthy, lean meat and fish in moderation can be part of a healthy diet. The film also states that drinking too much milk is bad, but like meat, it can be part of a healthy diet when consumed in moderation.Still, the film has other redeeming moments, such as its valid points about the effect the consumption of animal products has on the world. For example, it states that world hunger would end if all the grain fed to animals was redistributed to people who need it. In my opinion, this argument is better because it is about humanity as a whole, which is more important than one person's diet. Arguments like these are much more likely to convert me to veganism than questionable claims about the supposed lack of nutritional value in all animal products.Overall, Forks Over Knives, has something great to say, but it is seriously hampered by its strong, biased anti-meat and anti- dairy stance. This position is repeatedly enforced throughout the film, which could encourage some viewers to become vegan or even look down on those who eat animal-based products. Although there are great things about low-fat, whole-food, plant-based diets, this movie is not the best way to learn about them.
axanghelescu Warning this might have spoilers !! If anyone knows me they would say that I'm the biggest health advocate, so I really had high hopes for this movie. And while I don't hold any degrees in nutrition, I do have graduate studies and critical thinking in general, and I do know how to write/read scientific research on a topic. That being said, I thought this movie LACKED ESSENTIAL DETAILS ABOUT THE RESEARCH RESULTS shown. It's unfortunate but the way they presented the research was very biased (to prove their theory "animal produce bad, plant produce good") which is just wrong. I have a hard time believing a person that does research in this field at Cornel University would choose to ignore the whole research and present only parts of it for the sake of making this movie, so I am really baffled as to what these people actually think and how they could make such a one sided story. After I saw the movie I thought it was great but I couldn't help thinking how come the striking "scientific" discoveries and correlations between cancer tumors and plant/animal protein intake were not taken seriously by the medical community. Well I answered my questions just by doing a tiny bit of research. There are many blogs objectively discussing the misinformation in this movie (and there sure is a lot). So just google some critique, it is all there including "The curious case of Campbell's rats", or dig up the original research papers if you find the critique non objective. So that was a major disappointment, I can expect people to misinterpret and broadcast bad research but not "scholars" who have dedicated lives to it. The movie has the right intention, YES the western diet is killing you, YES people are uneducated when it comes to knowing what to eat, YES people don't know that food can be your medicine, YES your diet can save you from taking a fist of pills and having surgeries. But NO, there is no scientific proof that animal products cause cancer or reduce your life span while plant-based food reverses the cancer and guarantees longevity !!!! No such thing folks. There are so many many complex factors in determining what is cancer(and how different all types of cancer are), how it evolves and so on. Half of this movie is presenting some very biased and taken out of context evidence. That is unacceptable, and that's why I can't give it more than 3 stars. If you want to watch a documentary about food, watch FOOD INC.
cullenbrian So you have lazy fat processed food eating burger loving types who never get off their asses to exercise who end up fat and sick , on the other end of the scale are this lot , who stroke the Chakras while drinking lentil soup made with " organic water " that cleanses their stressed body's of big pharma toxins etc etc , it really is simple in one sense , a well BALANCED diet with the correct amount of foods from all sources and some exercise , extremes on either side are unnecessary and also no fun . The statistics used are in some cases laughable and lots have been debunked as mentioned above , eg the china study .ill be honest i only watched the first 40 mins of this and had to turn it off, i would recommend HBO's The Weigh Of The Nation for a balanced look at diet and why the health of the developed world is the way it is .
daniel-stickney This is one of the best films that I've seen on the subject of health and nutrition. Most of my friends who have seen it say they wish they had known what they learned from the film years ago. The scientific data is clearly communicated in a way that is understandable by the general public. Let's face it, most of us do not have a degree in human nutrition and are not capable of naming amino acids, or describing the function of endothelial cells. Most people learned all they know of nutrition from the USDA food pyramid and/or their parents, which leaves them nutritionally illiterate. The consequences on our health are dramatic, and fortunately preventable. For those who want to dig into all the studies and scientific details there are plenty of resources from the contributing guests (Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, by Dr Esselstyn, The China Study, by T Colin Campbell, The Starch Solution by Dr McDougall, and plenty more). After seeing the film and understanding the "why" behind the recommendations, the companion recipe books provide the "how" for evolving our diet.I see that often detractors forget several key elements of the information presented. These studies have been performed by many researchers and doctors, not just one they want to pick on. They have been done over decades and on massive numbers of people. The conclusions are used today to reverse heart disease, diabetes type 2, erectile dysfunction, some cancers, and more. Non-scientists with no health or nutrition degree or peer reviewed articles published in leading scientific journals are *not* in a position to contradict the world's leading experts, but that sure doesn't stop them from thinking they can. Those who prove what they say is true with their actions are who the population needs to listen to; not those who deny what is clearly proved by doctors and the patients they heal on a daily basis. Deniers of the conclusions of Forks Over Knives are like people arguing that the Earth is flat despite the crushing evidence to the contrary.
