TonyStinkmetal I saw this because it stars most of the cast of Bridesmaids and Adam Smith (who is great on Parks & Recreation).I was shocked and offended by the old-school sexism of this movie. characters who don't feel the need to marry are referred to as an "affront". characters who don't want children are show to be mean and selfish.this is a swing back to pre-stonewall and pre-feminist times.this is why American are seen as provincial and homophobic-- because mainstream American culture IS provincial and homophobic. when films like this set out to define a "new normal" they disregard the fact that they are also defining a new abnormal.
pcp23 First off, what a tremendous waste of Kristen Wiig, Chris O'Dowd, and Maya Rudolph. Secondly, I've never hated Adam Scott in anything but wow, having him talk constantly about hot women with big cans and how Megan Fox was flexible in bed was super weird and off-putting coming from him, the ultimate sensitive proto-hipster. I wanted him to get hit by a bus pretty much the entire movie. His hairstyling was basically a master class on how to look like a supreme douche. And Westfeldt, oh man. She wrote this steaming pile of dogturd, and in it she's this perfect saint who is a milquetoast of the first order, and plays the old 'I can't understand why he'd be interested in little old me!!' bit like the fate of humanity depends on it. I'll tell you exactly how this piece of garbage got made: Jon Hamm: hey everyone! My girlfriend wrote this awesome screenplay, I want you all to be in it! Everyone else: Sounds great!! (Thinking) oh god, we have to do it, he's Don Draper for Christ's sake...ULGH this screenplay is so bad...Tina fey nailed it when he was on 30 rock and had the whole plot line about people doing things for him cause he's a handsome idiot...Even though they SPOILER ALERT FOR THE MORONS WHO DIDN'T FIGURE THIS MOVIE OUT FROM THE PREVIEW get together at the end, the entire movie just rags on marriage and having kids just like you would expect brainless, beautiful, rich white people like westfeldt and Hamm to do. One of the damning things about Megan Fox's character in the movie was that she voted for bush in 2004. Eyeroll. F you, Hollywood aholes, god forbid anyone have opinions that don't exactly align with yours, and if they do they're ANIMALS. Oh and westfeldt's character moves to Brooklyn cause she can't afford private school or some garbage, but somehow she can afford to decorate her old apartment and the new house like she lives in a Nancy Meyers movie. One last thing--in one scene, Westfeldt is wearing FLARE LEG JEANS and it just perfectly encapsulated for me how out of touch this movie is.
JAB Review Little to redeem this completely unfunny attempt to define romance or commitment for the "hook-up" generation. Imagine the closing scene in Jerry Maguire and replace the lines "You complete me" or "You had me at Hello" with "F**k the sh*t out of me". Really. This is what passes for romance these days I guess. I have kids, I've watched marriages fail. I was ready to see the pain and humor in the challenges of keeping the passion alive while changing diapers. But this lazy, self-absorbed movie never gets past superficial, cynical character development. The writers' and director's guiding question seems to be "How do you make a marriage feel more like a one-night stand?" This so-called "romantic comedy" was neither.
HelenMary good, though not uplifting unconventional romance about a group of friends with kids who inspire a non-attached couple to have a baby without the complications of a romantic relationship or living together. This film looks at the reality of relationships, the pitfalls and the less than glamorous side of having a baby. Jennifer Westfeldt (who also wrote and directed) and Adam Scott, were the BFF's who have a baby together (Jason and Julie), with Maya Rudolph, British (IT Crowd) funny man Chris O'Dowd, SNL veteran Kristen Wiig in a non-comedic role, Madman John Hamm as well as gorgeous Edward Burns and Megan Fox as the other main players. Each character was well delineated and distinct, well acted - special mention to Chris O'Dowd - with a few funny moments. As a romcom though I feel that it was probably more dramatic and not amusing, and entertaining only as an experience rather than in it's own right. I thought it was a good film but I'd not say I enjoyed it greatly as there was much that was difficult viewing. Of course there was the Hollywood ending, which whilst it didn't make logical sense it was predictable. It was done with passion and commitment and I felt that the narrative was important to those telling it, nothing really to complain about, just not a light-hearted watch. Alcohol was the mascot of this film, both for pleasure and pain, another 'flag' that the characters were going through difficult times.Adult, family issues film, that didn't have the tenderness or passion or comedy of some similar titles (Parenthood, Crazy Stupid Love, What To Expect When You Are Expecting etc) and left a rather depressed and downbeat feeling with a final scene that was an anti-climax and rather poorly scripted due to the choice of language; it sort of just made the end a bit "oh. was that it?" Much in the film was a bit "Meh!" and I'm still not sure whether this was a 5 or a 6 as whilst the performances were good, and the production fine, it had no charisma or anything to really hang your hat on.
