Synopsis

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and — if he has his way — every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop… except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara and Jerry Wooters who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

MJB784 I was disappointed with it because it was too rushed. We didn't get to know the characters that well. It had some cool action scenes. I liked how it was filmed not how it was written. For example, the love interest with two different couples wasn't interesting and some of the action scenes moved too quickly.
billcr12 Sean Penn plays 1940's mobster Mickey Cohen. It is set in Los Angeles and Penn scowls and spews venom for almost two hours. Josh Brolin is an honest cop who is drafted to make life miserable for Mickey. He recruits fellow cops to work off the record, doing whatever it takes to beat the bad guys. Ryan Gosling is one of them and Emma Stone is his and Cohen's squeeze in a dangerous love triangle. The lines are a bit cliche, but the acting is awesome. Sean Penn can do anything on screen and be totally believable. Gangsters is a fun diversion for a couple of hours.
tonymac-54085 I could not believe the amount of gunfire and non injured good guys , this film is very much a childrens release . so utterly stupid its beyond belief ,, i liked certain characters in this film but was just pure non serious entertainment ,a gangster film so unrealistic it borderlines comedy
areatw I'm not sure what to think of 'Gangster Squad' to be honest. On one hand I was impressed with the production, particularly the action scenes which were enjoyable and very well made. Set in 1940s LA, the attention to detail was meticulous, from the cars to the clothes and even the wallpaper and furniture. On the other hand, I thought it was dull and repetitive. There's nothing special about 'Gangster Squad' that makes it stand out from other gangster movies, it's too generic. That said, I thought the cast did a decent enough job at making it somewhat interesting, especially Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen.Overall, 'Gangster Squad' isn't a bad movie, but it's not a particularly good one either. I enjoyed it to a certain extent, but largely thanks to the action scenes which only account for a fraction of the running time.
