movieliker1 This is classified as a comedy because it has a good ending --- characters end up happy, healthy and successful. Not because it is a a hilarious knee slapper. As opposed to a traditional tragedy that has a bad ending --- characters die, get killed, are unhappy, unsuccessful.I found it to be a mature, intelligent and realistic look at what happens to couples sometimes when they have been together for a long time. They lose intimacy --- emotional, psychological, mental and physical intimacy. And one spouse seems to take the other for granted. My only complaint would be the therapist jumped to sex too quickly without exploring other aspects of their lives.I especially liked the intelligent and mature way the couple dealt with their problems. They did't get violent. They did't get personal. They just got exasperated, walked out, spent time alone thinking, and eventually came back to try again. It is funny in a mature and intelligent way. But it won't leave you rolling on the floor.
juneebuggy This was very good, mostly due to Meryl Streep & Tommy Lee Jones who (as you'd expect) are just fantastic. The story is cute, a little uncomfortable at times, if I'm honest (not sure how much I want to think about the fact that I just saw Meryl give Tommy oral sex in a movie theatre) but I have to give this movie credit for giving a thoughtful look at mature relationships and I enjoyed it way more than I expected to.For the most part this is a drama, with funny bits centering on a wife who convinces her husband of 30 years to visit a marriage therapist in a small town called Hope Springs. The couple have drifted apart and she wants to put the spark back in their relationship (stop sleeping in separate rooms) TLJ complains about the price and the fact that all therapists are crooks who will give them more problems than really exist. Jones and Streep have genuine chemistry together and their timing is impeccable. This really peels back the layers on the ups and downs of a 30 year relationship. Meryl is perfection as always, playing an everybody's mother or grandmother type woman. I found TLJ's character a bit heartbreaking actually, playing the grumpy old man to perfection, set in his ways while also showing his struggle to open up in therapy and how in the end he was willing to do almost anything for his wife.Steve Carell, is also excellent as the therapist, he plays it straight and does a great job but I couldn't help thinking every time they panned to him during the therapy sessions that he was going to say something hilarious, or pull the pin on a hand grenade he just happened to have lying around. I kept waiting for it. 3/29/15
g-bodyl First off, Hope Springs is not the great film it could have been or was suggested by the trailers so I was a bit disappointed by that. That being that, this was still a pretty good movie that I'm sure is relatable to older married couples as this film delves pretty deep into mature themes such as sex life entering old age. Me being a young guy, I thought I would be turned off but actually it didn't do that so much. There are several funny scenes here, but I would label this film more of a drama than a comedy because that's what it is.David Frankel, who directed the magnificent "Devil Wears Prada," is back at it again here in Hope Springs. After thirty years of marriage, Kay and Arnold begin to realize their marriage has been drifting apart. Kay, much to Arnold's displeasure, contacts a well-known sex therapist to help them renew the strength in their marriage. This movie is all about the showdown between two of the greatest actors of anyone's generation: Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. Honestly, I did not dig Streep's performance as I thought I would. She's not awful, but not great either. Jones is just utterly amazing. No matter what genre he does, he goes above and beyond and once again shows that here. Steve Carell does a pretty good job in his dramatic role, though I thought he would be somewhat funnier.Overall, this is just a good film, but nothing special. It may be a good date night movie or a film older couples will like to watch. Personally, I liked it but to a certain degree. My high score only comes from Tommy Lee Jones who I just plain love as an actor. I rate this film 8/10.
M S My wife and I are in the middle of watching this wretched film. Man, I can't take any more. Please.... make.... it.... stop....Now, to the actual review. It's bad, bad, really, really bad. In reality, that doesn't even begin to describe it. It's beyond really, really bad---way beyond. It's so bad that I can't even find a word for how bad it is. Ghastly? No, that's not nearly strong enough. Vile? No, it's worse than that. Truly painful to watch (and I watch Svengoolie all the time). I'm definitely going to have nightmares. Finally, I'm willing to wager that at least 90% of the positive reviews are from married women over the age of 50, where the roles are exactly the opposite of those in the movie. That is, the woman is the one who is not keen on sex, not the husband.
