varunc-38301 If you're a teenager that suffers from depression or other mental health illnesses, watch this first. 'It's Kind of a Funny Story' taught me a lot.1. There doesn't have to be a massive reason for someone to feel depressed or even suicidal. I'm looking at you, 13 Reasons Why. You can have the most normal life with nothing going wrong and still fall into depression. 2. If you think you may be suffering, you get help. Craig does exactly that, and for that I would consider him a role model for teenagers going through the same thing.3. Your true friends may come from unexpected places. For Craig, that place was a mental health ward. As quirky as the setting is, it is amazing for him to realise that the people that will change his life aren't necessarily the ones who are accepted by society.4. Sometimes, a change of scenery helps. For Craig, school was a high pressure environment where he felt that he was about to implode. In the ward, he found peace, unlocked his creative potential and managed to understand what the right direction for him is.5. Follow your own direction. Think about your strengths and happiness over what is supposedly the 'correct' road. Focus on your mental health first.6. Be kind to others, and you will be rewarded with friendship.I took one mark off because at times it felt too 'neat' and because it was packaged as a rom-com, but other It is an important movie, but I feel as if many people have not noticed it yet. This is my first review on IMDb and I highly recommend it.
natashapadmaraj The movie gets beneath the layers of thick we've all covered ourselves with as we move through life. It simply unravels how we could all potentially mess ourselves up if we don't occasionally draw back to basics and reset entirely. Take of this cloak of who we might be someday versus who we are!The movie begins with a teenage boy who has suicidal thoughts and in the attempt of helping himself, insists on being checked into a psychiatric ward. As the movie progresses, so many thoughts come to mind: Aren't we all just layering ourselves with expectations that sometimes make us feel stuck and we can't move? Like a million pretty sweaters under a fancy looking leather jacket but, at the inflexibility to bend to tie your shoelaces. How many of us go back to basics to just engage with things that basically make us who we are by connecting with our senses- sounds, visual creativity, touch, taste and smells. Everything that actually screams existence and just being. Most of us are just so wound up in our heads that we wrap up this beautiful mind with just thoughts over thoughts limiting it from evolving or growing or allowing it to function as its holistic self. This movie is made like as if it were really happening right there in front of you. I recommend everyone watch it.For those wondering am I messed up? - you'd find your answers. And finally, the movie talks about giving and being there for another. There's nothing more powerful and fulfilling than making a difference in someone else's life. While this review is my first and I've tried to focus on the heart of the movie more than the actual storyline here. My hope is you watch it and let the story unravel the way it speaks to you.
reverendlinneken The only thing this film had going for it was the acting. Completely unnecessary jabs are taken at trans people; tired, racist tropes are used to try and elicit a laugh; and in the end the take home message is that the depression the protagonist is feeling was nothing more than self indulgence. This was garbage, and it was an awful message to send to young people who deal with depression, which is a real thing that causes real pain and suffering. This film was awful, don't waste your time.
Jerrod Beckman From the opening scene of this movie I was enveloped in the story being told, I've had many high peaks and subsequently many low valleys during the years I've been alive and the self-doubting, socially awkward personality of the main character was in so many ways like looking in the mirror for me. The supporting characters were perfectly performed especially Zack Galifianakis and Emma Roberts. This movie is poorly categorized as a comedy in my opinion, it's more of an inspirational movie with occasional moments of light-hearted, almost cynical views of mental illness, the struggles people endure and the effects those struggles can have on people. So while I'm sure there's many people that completely disagree with this review for me personally this movie was everything I could've hoped for and so much more.
