philipposx-12290 Rarely does "Johnny English" do anything wrong. The movie goes exactly into the direction and structure it wants to go. It is paved with delightful humor and even romance. Rowan Atkinson delivers big time, giving Johnny English the perfect mix of slapstick Mr Bean and even some James Bond elements. That is exactly what makes him the perfect protagonist; likeable but also not completely stupid. Does the movie take itself serious? No, but it doesn't need to. The plot ist pretty predictable, but that is no problem if it is executed so well. In addition, Johnny English even features some nice action sequences and some good relationships. But At the end of the day, it's the humor that makes the movie. Over all nearly 90 minutes (that by the way never drag) the laughs never stop coming. It is not the deepest comedy, but the laughs feel fresh, well written and performed great by Atkinson. Even the supporting actors such as Ben Miller & Natalie Imbruglia do a fine job.All in all, "Johnny English" is far from a cinematic masterpiece with excellent storytelling, iconic one liners or the most exciting and deep plot. But I would lie if I said I don't have a good time watching this movie over and over again and still laugh all the way. 9/10
Python Hyena Johnny English (2003): Dir: Peter Howitt / Cast: Rowan Atkinson, John Malkovich, Natalie Imbruglia, Ben Miller, Oliver Ford Davies: Spoof of a sub genre that has been spoofed many times. The writers didn't hurt themselves on plot ideas so they came up with a concept that is as old as rocks. It regards the stealing of the Queen's crown jewels that agent Johnny English was suppose to protect. He is the only agent available because the others died in an explosion. The rest involves English and his constant miscalculations and mishaps. Conclusion is effective due to timing and directing by Peter Howitt. He previously made Sliding Doors as well as the idiotic Antitrust. Rowan Atkinson has good intentions but he mugs every scene to the point where the jokes misfire. John Malkovich as the French heir is uninteresting, which is unfortunate considering the quality of actor Malkovich is. Natalie Imbruglia as a female agent is useless because her role renders her merely as an attraction. Ben Miller plays English's smart sidekick in what is clearly a reference to the superior Pink Panther films. Oliver Ford Davies plays an Archbishop who manages to fall victim to the prat falls of a bad script as well. The film could have examined the idea of multiple agents but everything including the phony sets is tiring until Atkinson succeeds in burying the idea that was already buried. Score: 4 / 10
Lolitta Ho Johnny English is what it promises to be – an amusing and light-heard film. But what would you expect from Rowan Atkinson, the actor in Mr Bean? There are some strikingly funny scenes in the movie. But be prepared for some outlandish humour and chauvinistic jokes. But be prepared also for 007 and Austin Powers-style gadgets, which (I hope) you'll also laugh at, as I did. However, there are some weaker aspects to the film. For example, the movie portrays Chinese people as the bad guys and, in a way, vilifies them (though there are certainly bad apples in the Chinese race). Another one is that thinking logically, you would find some scenes improbable. In short, though this movie was a bit short of in-depth food for thought, it was a quite funny and light-hearted comedy. Very suitable if you're just looking for an hour or so of laughter and nothing in-depth.
Luigi Di Pilla I decided to watch the first Johnny English with my son cause he likes Mister Bean a lot and me of course too. The other reason is that actually they show Johnny English - Reborn at the theaters. I really expected more but the story was very simply built. The action and spy scenes were well executed but all a copy from other thriller movies. The funny scenes were therefore good and original. I had to laugh very much at times. The actors especially John Malkovich delivered a credible role as the future King of England. It worked for an entertaining evening but not more. It deserves a good 6.5/10.If you like Rowan Atkinson in other movies so don't miss "Mr. Bean's Holiday". You won't regret it.
