inspectors71 Trash. Just Write is just plain bad, a cheap-jack, cutesy-poo, name-dropping cable movie attempt to cash in on the romantic comedy genre. There isn't an original thought or line of dialogue in this garbage. What your left with is a crummy attempt to be sweet and topical, and all you're going to get is a headache. The performances are of the dollar store variety. Jeremy Piven is likable, but he has a better radio-announcer voice than a screen presence. Sherilyn Fenn, all curvy and wholesome under her Marilyn Monroe makeup is just bland. Both actors, and the whole supporting cast, look as if they're in it for the money only. I saw this--or suffered through it--as a way to spend time with my family while recovering from surgery. I think barfing in the recovery room as the happy gas wore off was a more pleasant experience.Skip it!
oliver-53 This is as the cover of the video says a romantic comedy. A fun movie that although it is not going to change the world gives you a moment away from the day's trials and tribulations. Isn't that the best thing that a movie can do? Jeremy Piven is a great comedian who can take any material and make it his, so any fan must see this movie. He and Ms. Fenn should make more movies together because their chemistry is right. This movie was made by men who have never before or since made another film. If I understand it correctly the producers are dentists who love movies and wanted to make this one based on their script. Rent it and share it with someone you love with popcorn.
TxMike SPOILERS - As I watched this movie on TV I kept thinking I had seen the lead actress, Sherilyn Fenn, somewhere before. Then I figured it out, she is the dark-haired twin of Charlize Theron. She was also "Helena" in "Boxing Helena", a cult film I've yet to see.In "Just Write" she plays a beautiful young movie star (no stretch) who has doubts about a new script when a Hollywood tour bus driver (Jeremy Piven) comes up to her in a bar to ask for an autograph but she mistakes him for a screenwriter. He is too embarrassed to tell her different, and ends up taking on the re-write project through a series of improbable actions, including horning in on the most powerful agent in LA who inexplicably agrees to represent him and convince Fenn's agent that he can do the re-write.It really is Piven's story, how he is bogged down as a bus driver in his father's business, with no plan to realize his potential. There are lots of subplots, the father trying to get him a girl, Fenn and her obnoxious boyfriend breaking up, her dislike for those who don't tell the truth, the conclusion is fairly predictable with Piven's re-write being successful and his father driving the bus, announcing that "to your right is the home of Oscar-winning screenwriter and beautiful star..."I rate the film "6" for enjoyment without requiring any mental stretch at all. Fenn sure is easy to look at for an hour or two. Now, I've got to get "Boxing Helena!!"
tsloan-2 Jeremy Pevin and Sherilyn Fenn are a dynamic screen couple, which is apparent from their first scenes. Their understated performances are accompanied by some first rate support from JoBeth Williams and Alex Rocco. In Ms. Williams case, the movies over before you realize it was her; this movie gave me a reason to remember Alex Rocco.Despite the implausibility of the situation these people behave like normal people. If your going to pass yourself off as a screen writer, you might get some books about screen writing. The inability of "power" people in Hollywood to admit they don't know someone whose "in" is believable and a huge asset to the deception. This is the rare Hollywood romance where we actually get a clue as to what attracts these two people to one another. Only once do they resort to the music and photo montage of a date to explain the mutual appeal. The rest of the time the screenwriter lets us hear what's going on with these people.A great movie. I'm going to go watch it again.
