krbuck1221 First let me say that I'm white and even though this movie has an all black cast, it isn't a "black movie". It's a movie about families and one I relate to very well because my family is as dysfunctional as the one portrayed here.I have seen this movie at least 4 times and I recommend it to anyone longing for a movie the family can watch together. It's extremely well cast with all the characters creating the empathy necessary to draw you in.Whoopi Goldberg is exceptional as the matriarch suffering the loss of her husband as well as the antics of her extended family. LL Cool J and Vivica Fox, as Ray Bud and Lucille, and Anthony Anderson as Junior, play there parts very well. Jada Pinkett Smith as Charisse, plays her character so well you want to choke her. I have to add one thing, Anthony Anderson is one of my favorites and I've liked him in almost everything I have seen him in. He plays both comedic and dramatic roles equally well. The funniest scenes in the movie are between Marguerite Slocum, played by Loretta Devine, and her "Demonseed" son Royce, played by Darius McCrary. He is best remembered as Eddie Winslow from the TV show 'Family Matters'.There are some curse words, (the 'D' word, the 'H' word and one use of the 'S' word) but they are in context to the particular scene in which they are used. The one suggestive scene involves Royce and Bernice Talbert and it's included to show the emptiness Royce's life.Would I recommend it? Absolutely! I don't remember hearing of this movie when it was released in 2001 but I predict it will continue to build a following and become a classic in the same way 'A Christmas Story' has, since its debut 25 years ago.
OldeSkool (OldeSkool) One of the worst movie's ever and a waste of a talented cast with Devine and Smith being the worst. Their constant yelling and schilling worked on my last nerve. Whoopi acted as if she was embarassed to be in this piece of crap. And the ending was just too neat for my taste. Don't waste your time.
Perry Mercer (Blackace) This movie has good intentions, but falls a little short due to the execution of the plot. I'm not going to go into the whole storyline, as by now you probably already know. What I do want to say is it's good to have a decent black movie make it to the theater and do fairly well. Besides Soul Food, this is the only other feel good black family movie that has been released in the last 5 years. It's a shame it didn't do that well at the box office. It could be because of the nature of the film or the lackluster storyline. Whatever the case may be, it was worth watching at least once. There are some very funny parts in this film and the acting was decent. I was surprised to see Toni Braxton in this film. She actually did a pretty good job. LL Cool J needs to find his nitch. I think he's still looking for it. I liked him in Deep Blue Sea, but Rollerball was a mess. Whoopie only had a small part, but she really helped the movie along. Overall I give it 6 out of 10.
compman86 The acting was mediocre, the plot was stupid, and the humor was distasteful. I can't remember laughing ONCE. It's basically a movie about low-lives scrambling around, threatening to kill each other and yell at each other. Most of the movie has nothing to do with the man who died, but rather with the dysfunctional lives of his family. I give this movie a D- and highly recommend to not come within 100 feet of this movie.
