Reviews

al-kamieniecki Ok so why am I writing a review for an 18 year old movie? Because I always thought this film got ripped unfairly. I stumbled across it last night and ended up recalling why I loved it. Are there corny scenes? Yes. Is this a film for people with no imagination? No. You have to buy into the basic premise which is that there are possibilities out there which will astound you when you least expect it. So deal with the zero g dancing. Imagine you are going where Jim is going.
macpet49-1 DePalma is famous for stealing script ideas and copying other preceding directors (Hitchcock) who did it better. He's a sad case of too much money and no talent. This is what he'd produce if he just had sex with Disney and immediately after restarted his Prozac. The film starts like a hundred others--brief glimpses into everyone's personas/lives with the usual bedroom humor and moms and dads over the barbees just to let us know they are 'one of us', just reglar folk! Then suddenly they are all astronauts bouncing around no gravity cabins and walking on Mars. The first crew runs into a mean genie who kills all except the Black fella (how pc). The others break the rules to retrieve him only to lose two of themselves in space (one gets iced and the other elopes with dead aliens). There are I think allusions to the Bible (Eve is the big faced statue, mother of us all), theory of chaos (asteroid strike/how Buddhist), and even transsexuals (the alien doesn't appear to have any sex). Lots of off key heavenly choirs singing in the background and doors open and close. Most of the actors appear weary or stunned and look like they regret having signed on. Why are American films sooooo baaaaad? Mafias control them, that's why.
graham77777 Interesting concept, visually impressive, but the story is full of ridiculous plot holes. Read other reviews or the Goofs section to see these. The dialog is equally lame, despite the strong actors delivering their lines. However, what REALLY kills this movie is the awful, inappropriate music. Once you start paying attention to the soundtrack, it's impossible to ignore. The soundtrack makes what could be a suspenseful, gripping movie into a cartoon. Two stars. Generously.
Steven Freekin I'm a huge fan of Brian DePalma movies and I've put off watching Mission to Mars for years and finally last night i viewed it. WOW...what a waste of time. I can't believe they spend over a hundred million dollars to finance and distribute this pile of crap. No wonder it failed miserably. In the theatrical trailer for this film, they put "A Brian DePalma Film," which is followed by "director of Mission Impossible." So therefore i was expecting great suspense, on the edge of your seat thrills, and great action similar to Mission Impossible but on A MISSION TO MARS.The film does have moments of DePalma's genius with suspense and tension along with his uncut takes signatures shots however, the characters are flat and almost one dimensional. It was hard to relate to any of them and so my viewing experience was just about watching for the sake of watching rather than being immersed in the film. Most of the visual effects in the film are great however, The Martian looked like an unfinished 1990s carton animatic. Perhaps the most annoying part of this film is its score, which i found dated, boring, distracting, and stupid. I'm not a fan of this composer at all. His music sound like left over crap from The Thing score that wasn't used in that film as well. This composer also killed another Brian DePalma film that i thought was great, The Untouchables. In that particular film the score made the movie sound like a live action cartoon of Ben and Jerry.
