capone666 Zombies who regularly eat teenage brains are moodier than zombies who don't.However, it'll be hard to get a hold of the adolescent minds in this sci-fi thriller. When earth passes through the tail of a comet, all spectators are turned into a flesh-eating zombie. Promiscuous teen Reggie and her cheerleader sister Sam (Catherine Mary Stewart, Kelli Maroney) awake the next day unchanged. Armed with an Uzi they blast their way through the undead to reach a group of scientists who want to dissect the sisters to find a cure.Considered to be the inspiration behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as a main contributor to the fledgling horror-comedy sub-genre, this 1984 cult classic was ahead of its time not only in terms of its jocular tone, but also in casting two strong female leads as the survivors.Unfortunately, sexist zombies are going to have a tough choice this election. Predrag A fun diversion from the traditional zombie & post-apocalyptic fare. Scary situations & deadly dangers are still present to threaten our heroines & heroes, but "Night of the Comet" also has an infectious sense of free-spirited fun to lighten things up. Cathrine Mary Stewart & Kelli Maroney are terrific as two teenaged sisters who battle zombies & other end-of-the-world hazards, in between bouts of giving each other stylin' make-overs and trying on all the latest totally cool new outfits at a nearby mega mall. Like totally, fer sure! A young Robert Beltran impresses as a fast-on-his-feet trucker who chances upon the sisters at a local radio station and decides to stick with them and see what this uncertain new world has in store for them all. A simple but effective red gel overlay used on the camera lens during all the outdoor shots reminds you that things are no longer what they used to be thanks to that deadly meteor. Bummer, dude! Solid, straight-forward direction from Thom Eberhardt keeps the proceedings moving along at a steady clip. A tight script with a few clever ideas keeps this from just being another doom-laden end of the world flick. Some great performers here, starting with Kelli Maroney as the younger sister. She's been in a few other films. The other main stars, Robert Beltran and Catherine Mary Stewart were fine, but I've never heard of them since. If the movie had taken a more serious note, this film wouldn't have been so much fun to watch, to see the zero budget special effects, to listen to the cheesy 80's songs, and as for the end, yes it all kind of neatly plays out, but sometimes you don't need a severed head in a box to make a film work. Plus isn't it nice to know that DMK was one of the survivors too...Overall rating: 7 out of 10.
horrorcode Been on an 80s horror kick as of late and actually watched this on my computer the other night. Never saw it in the 80s, so it was a nice surprise and fit right in with the stuff I've been injecting directly into my eyeballs lately.Love the concept. World's excited for a comet, comet comes and kills them all. That's not a spoiler by the way, that's just the beginning. The survivors have their run of the town. First are scared, then have fun. Then get scared again when the bad stuff starts a-happening.First half is definitely better than the second half and the concept definitely is much more fun than the full execution of said concept, but overall this flick's pretty fun and definitely worth a watch for anyone who loves those B-horror movies like me.I will say if ever there was a horror film from the 80s that deserved a remake, this could be the one. There are areas that could be improved-- specifically what the survivors do and who the enemies are-- and would make this a pretty damn good current horror flick.
TheMarwood When most of humanity is turned into a pile of dust and laundry from a comet, the blissfully unaware valley girl Regina spent the night hooking up in a cinema projection booth and playing arcade games. It doesn't take long before she's attacked by a zombie and joins her sister, who spent the night in a metal shed (whatever works, I guess) at a radio station where they assume there will be help. They meet up with another survivor and hit the empty streets of southern California. They make a few stops to try on clothes and run around the mall. Really, what else is there to do during the apocalypse? It's the main character's nonchalant attitude toward humanity's end that gives this film its charm. Red gradient filters on the camera lens to make the sky red, add to the hokey feel. A last act with evil scientists spoil much of the fun and never fully works, but what preceded it is one of the more entertaining horror comedy entries of the 80s.
