jackcwelch23 One of those movies that is good but could have been great if they added on about 20 minutes. The movie just feels disjointed in its pacing and its themes are not explored as much as they should be. It does not take long before the seemingly perfect girl Calvin has created is fed up with his own frustrating personality. We feel as frustrated as she does, he wants a complicated girl, but can't come close to dealing with it when he gets one. Plus Annette Benning and Antonio Banderas parts are glorified cameos when they really should have had more to do later on in the story, like Steve Coogan and Elliot Gould. We enjoy the happy times Calvin and Ruby share, but that part is glossed over and we get to the unpleasant parts too fast. Im summary, equal weight is not given to both sides of a relationship, something done better in the movies it draws inspiration from. Still, it's an insightful and well made fantasy comedy drama, but it just didn't dive deep enough for me.
packers-8 No offense meant but Paul Dano makes the move unwatchable. His character is trite and cliché, perhaps offensively so. But even worse is the actor himself. I mean... could they have picked more of a dolt? At least get a bloody haircut. And the fact that he types on a typewriter... seriously, how contrived. All the Catcher in the Rye/Sallinger references, spare me.It's actually one of the worst movies I could imagine. All the characters are cardboard, nothing is thought-out or original or inspiring. His brother is almost as clichéd as the protagonist. I mean really, the more I think about the more I hate it.But Paul Dano may still be the worst thing about the movie. I mean couldn't they afford Michael Cera? Don't watch this, please don't. If you're looking for something to watch, just keep rewatching the scenes in Prisoners where Hugh Jackman tortures Paul Dano. Please don't watch this.
tr91 Written by and starring Zoe Kazan, Ruby Sparks tells the story of a writer (Paul Dano) who finds romance in the most unimaginable way, with a character in his story coming to life as his lover. The whole film just felt unique and done so well. The two lead actors (Kazan & Dano) had great chemistry. The supporting cast were also very good throughout the film.Ruby Sparks works very well as a drama/comedy with a hint of fantasy. The film flows at a good pace and the characters develop nicely without becoming stale/one dimensional. All in all a very good film which I would recommend to anyone, it just creeps in to my top 10 films of 2012.
winnocous I found this movie engaging if not anything else. Engaging because it exploits the idea of romancing a version of a person's character, and not necessarily the person in entirety. This has been profoundly spelt in the movie by the lead character when he discusses his books. Then it also makes clear of the banality of finding logic in every phenomenon through the protagonist own admission towards the end. One particular observation made by the protagonist's brother about women runs on the same theme. As the author discovers his power to manipulate Ruby Sparks through his writing, he struggles to micromanage a version of her where he is completely satisfied. A chance encounter with his ex at a party reveals his previous attempts for the same endeavor which did not succeed. At last, when he finds such attempts to be futile the author seems to give up control but the twist towards the end suggest otherwise. Overall, a decent film.
