Synopsis

Jane, a struggling but perpetually stoned actress, has a busy day ahead. She has several important tasks on her list, including buying more marijuana. chriskirk_filmmaker This film is not remotely funny. The main character is really stoned, she acts like a complete moron (and I mean complete) and she ruins everything she touches. It certainly deglamorizes cannabis use, while at the same time relishing in it. The only problem with the film, and it is a major problem, an overwhelming one even, is that there is nothing about it that it is funny. There are no jokes, there is no wit, nothing amusing or surprising happens; she's just really really stoned and stupid. That's it. I guess you can consider that a spoiler.I only watched this cos Gregg Araki's early films are wonderful obscene punk queer anomalies. I had faith in him. He let me down. He let us all down.
jaywensley2004 It is human nature to laugh at pain, its a survival mechanism; so, there's a lot to laugh at in "Smiley Face." Anna Faris does an outstanding job of making a self-destructive character likable and sympathetic. That's Faris' gift to movie-goers, she is extremely likable. And that saves "Smiley Face." The movie starts off suggesting a female version of "Harold and Kumar..." but as it progresses the story becomes extremely dark.Jane F. (Faris' character) has a serious marijuana problem and doesn't know it. She isn't so much in denial as she is naive. She will learn. And as her day spins downward, it is often hilarious but increasingly painful to watch the good-natured but badly broken Jane F. (I suspect the AA reference is deliberate) crash and burn. The supporting cast is...supportive. The characters are underdeveloped, but this is Jane F.'s story so this is not a major failing, all though Jane Lynch is completely wasted in her role as a casting director.I would suggest watching this movie sober. Jane F's view of the world while under the influence might be disturbingly familiar and evocative for viewers who are high but mockingly funny if you know what she's going through while not going through it yourself. And it is a pretty accurate picture of what many smokers look like to those who aren't with them on the trip.
tropicasia1992 I don't know what people think when vote this thing over 5, especially when they also sit and write special reviews about this garbage!First of all, the cinematography is just awful: You can't sit and watch close ups of Anna Faris' pot-face for 90 minutes even if it was funny. No landscape, no sets, no interest by the film-makers to make at least a try.Secondly, the stupidity of the character is that heavy even for a pot- head. I'm a regular smoker but this movie insults the whole pot- community! OK, smokers eat a lot, OK we freak out sometimes, OK we can make the easiest thing look like nuclear science but we don't enter random houses, we don't break the fire-alarms when we can simply burn out the fire, we don't run around for no reason at all, we don't try to sell weed in random people (especially if they look like Cruella Deville), we can communicate with people around us, can make serious conversations, can be consistent and so more. Law-makers must had someone like this character in their heads when they proclaimed weed illegal! Last but not least there isn't any plot in this movie. The motive of the character is a bed, seriously? There aren't any hilarious cues and the film-makers fail totally to make any of the film's scenes really funny.I've watch another pot-head movies like Pineapple Express or How High and this one takes a place at the bottom of my rankings.
Desiree My, oh, my. What can I say about Smiley Face? I don't quite know what to say about it. Sometimes I chuckled, I laughed out loud once or twice, sometimes I looked at the screen with a questioning face, not knowing what to think. Most of the time I looked at the screen not knowing what to think or what kind of face to make.I am not really sure why this film was made or why the actors that were in it…were in it. I love Anna Faris, I love Danny Masterson, Adam Brody, and I love John Krasinski. I wish he didn't take this part. His role scared me a little bit. It was hard to believe it was the same man I was in love with from the office. His shower scene may have scarred me for life. Anyway, it wasn't funny, it wasn't too stupid, it wasn't amusing, it wasn't too boring…I don't like pot humor though so maybe the rest of the world will like this film.
