Johan Dondokambey The story is just another common one about a person struggle to get his needs and dreams and doing everything he could but to no avail. The little things are somewhat hilarious, despite very predictable. The bigger picture of the story however, doesn't really bind well between its pieces. They all seem like a forcefully strewn montage of pieces of uncorrelated stories. The focus characters are way too stretched with having all the other supporting roles, yet they are not developed well enough to see the real essence of the character's core characteristics. One thing good though, is the presence of the twists, although again as predictable as they are. The acting is just another average. Jason Lee doesn't act his face well, it seemed like he's trying to hard with other aspects of his act but forgot about facial expressions. So did happen in the case of Tom Green, but luckily the way Tom speaks out his dialog is quite funny already. Leslie Mann is also did an average performance and quite not been able to be funny herself.
satinaa9 I see here the seeds to 'My Name is Earl'. I've watched whatever Jason Lee flicks I can find. 'John' in this flick is closest to the Earl character in the TV series. IMHO, f you like 'Earl' you'll enjoy this.Erstwhile John makes an innocent promise to his niece to comfort her from early elimination from an 8th grade spelling bee. Ten years later, that promise comes back to bite him. He is the father figure for this niece, who in spite of her 'white trailer trash' mother and upbringing, has managed to get herself accepted at Harvard. He also made a commitment to his fiancé. Therein lies the conflict. There's some good shtick in this flick. The shaved-headed cop plays it over the top, to good effect. The dog, the organs man, the judge, all made me laugh, or at least chuckle...maybe a groan or two.
Benjamin Wolfe Why else do you go to see a movie with Jason Lee, Tom Green, Megan Mullally and Dennis Farina, directed by Bruce McCullugh from 'the Kids in the hall'? If everything fails otherwise, just to have a good time I would think. John and Elaine, a couple who's communication skills go awry one day, due to a promise that a particularly flip-headed uncle John makes to his niece Noreen, that Patty, (Mullally) had been video taping, some years before. Whoops, everything seems to come apart, for the somewhat happy young couple due to that fact. A over zealous father in law (Farina) who wants to put Jason Lee's character in his place, because his daughter is his 'Princess' (of course). A motivated and angry cop, with good dental hygiene habits, who is all over them like 'stink on a monkey'!!!Maybe they can put things right again, with the help of his old high-school buddy Walter Duffy or 'Duff' what could possibly go wrong?????? They,(all three) team up, as a serious 'Heavy' crew, looking to take down a good score. So that they can send the nice niece to college.Ha, this whimsically funny film had a wonderful, cast of kooks and meat-heads just to keep it on the edge. I think that if you have a funny bone, you should go and get this one. (***)
Spaceham First off, this movie SHOULD have been great. Bruce McCulloch directing? Yeah! And the cast is comedy gold: Jason Lee, Tom Green, Leslie Mann, Dennis Farina, John C. McGinley, Megan Mullally... I mean, even the women are funny! The only thing that's really lacking is, sadly, the script.Everyone is funny, they just don't have enough to work with. The characters are 2D, the plot paper thin, and everything is just too convenient. Now I didn't expect anything weighty or life changing. Just something worth caring about.Don't get me wrong, the movie IS funny. Tom Green is great, providing some hilarious moments (Drinking milk and then suddenly pouring lemon juice in his mouth, for instance.) For the most part though, the humor relies entirely on his performance, not the strength of the writing. Also, Jason Lee is cast here as the Straight, the regular guy just trying to get his life in order. Personally, I much prefer him as the goofy sidekick type (i.e. Tom Green). All in all, this makes for a palatable little episodic comedy. But there's not enough to sink your teeth into. You can't get involved enough to really let go and laugh.
