Reviews

one-nine-eighty The cult 80's TV show has been reinvented and brought to the big screen. If you remember the 80's show with fondness then you are going to be mixed about this, you'll either dislike it, or you'll hate it - looking at the other reviews on here that give it 9 or 10 out of 10 - I can't help wonder if they watched the same rubbish as I did. I want my review to be based on the film, rather than a comparison to the TV show which I loved and grew up with. Set up as fall-guys for a crime 4 army rangers are court-marshaled and sentenced to do time in 4 separate institutions. The leader of the 4, Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson) escapes and plots a plan of revenge, for which he requires his 3 ex-colleagues - Face (Bradley Cooper), Murdock (Sharlto Copley) and B.A. Baracus (Quinton Jackson). Pursued by the military and various other law enforcement agencies they attempt to clear their name. The plot is relatively weak with very few surprises; I'm not saying it was easy to understand, no. In fact whoever wrote this seemed adamant that they wanted to add a few twists in to make it cool - but it just convoluted things. I feel it was aimed at younger audiences rather than the fan base who would have watched the TV series. Maybe this younger audience turn up for pointless plot twists, things being blown up for fun and a script that tries to make everyone a comedian with one-liners that hit the mark every time - oh yeah, FTR, they probably appreciate the overuse of a shaking camera too which for me, just got annoying quickly. There are a lot of action sequences involved, but it's either predictable or totally unscientifically possible bonkers. While the acting is relatively average, none of the stars in this film are going to win any awards for performances. The 4 stars aside there were some players and parts in the film that seemed pointless, Jessica Biel's character would fall into that bracket. The film takes itself far too serious - and maybe this is why the TV series was successful in the 80's - while it may have been moronic at times and really camp, everyone knew that was the case. This film gives the impression that it's Billy-big-balls and wants to shout about it from the rooftops. Maybe this is aimed at a generation of people I don't understand, maybe this was just a poor attempt at making something cool, maybe this is a classic that I don't appreciate or understand - whatever it is, I'm only giving this 3 stars at most.
stormhawk2018 An indigestible turkey that means the adaptation to the cinema of the famous 80's TV series, The A-Team. We are before a succession of vertiginous and bombastic action scenes impossible and crazy even for a cartoon film. See the numbers with the helicopter and the tank. Any resemblance to the series is pure coincidence. The argument is confusing and uninteresting. The end is pitiful with another exaggerated scene of action in the containers of a ship with a special effects that sing to computer by the four sides. The actors who play the mythical team are disappointing. Liam Neeson is perhaps the one who hits the most, but he's too big for the role once played by George Peppard, because he can't imitate a good American accent. He's not alone in the category of British actors doing bad American accents, because frankly it's not easy. That's why you should just cast someone AMERICAN! What? Bruce Willis wasn't available?! Bradley Cooper, alias "Dog Face", makes too many antics, so many that he might have been better in the role of Murdock. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson looks like Mr. T, but in the film is too soft and has a ridiculous conscience problems and does not wear the necklaces of the authentic B.A. Baracus. And as for Murdock (portrayed by South African actor Sharlto Copley, who can't imitate a good American accent), say that his births do not have the grace of the genuine Murdock (Dwight Schultz) of the original series. It is missing also the famous tune of the series that in the film shines by its absence, as well as the disguises of Hannibal or the vehicles that constructed with three drums and a pile of junk. The van hardly comes out and the Vietnam war, of course, has been replaced by the Iraq war but the film's plot has nothing to do with that of the series. The A-Team always helped those who suffered abuse from a local chief. The translation to the big screen of this unforgettable series had to have been carried out scrupulously respecting the original series, otherwise we find ourselves with a routine action tape but bored by its exaggerated action scenes and its convoluted argument. But the fundamental problem of this failed adaptation is that the material on which it is based is mediocre. So let's not kid ourselves, The A-Team was a great series. What happens is that nostalgia prevents us from honestly judging it. And in those years, those who saw it when we were little we settled for anything such as Knight Rider or Miami Vice seen today are quite bad and proof of it is that the film adaptation of these series have been a sonic failure. And it is that there are things that it is better not to touch them and to leave them as they are not to spoil the good memory that we had of them. What's next, a Knight Rider or an Airwolf movie?
srepolt As a huge fan of the original television series I was more than ecstatic when I read that they were making a live action feature film. People can say what they want about the original show but it provided children and adults with fun, exciting, adventures for these four soldiers of fortune . Being a big fan of the original series I was worried that Hollywood would not do the A-Team Justice but boy was I wrong. Yes it's updated for a modern audience but the core of the A-Team was not lost in translation in this film. The movie makers were able to take what was great about the shows premise and the characters by updating it without losing what the A-Team is and was. I think all of the actors were cast perfectly for their roles and it was fun seeing some cameos of the original cast sprinkled throughout the film. The movies plot surprising follows the original origin of the A-Team from the show and by adding certain liberties to the storyline. I'm not going to go into the plot because it's not important in reviewing this film. All you need to know is that I believe Hollywood did a fine job bringing the A-Team up to date without losing all the things that made them great back in the 80's. The actors had so much chemistry making this film and you can clearly see that they had a blast doing it. The movie paid homage to the original while still being fresh and new at the same time. They even went as far as to explain why B.A. Dislikes Murdock and why B.A. Is scared of flying. This movie has great action, perfect comedic timing from all the actors and it managed to jump start a new franchise. I for one hope they make another film or a series of films because the A-Team is timeless and are genuine American heroes. Bottom line is, this movie was made for fans of the original TV show and if you grew up watching the A-Team like I did, you will love this movie.
imdb-45 I love every major actor in this film. But the miscasting is legendary. Liam Neeson is so badly miscast that you can see him trying to play the part of Hannibal right from the start and doing so in unconvincing fashion. He doesn't fit the part. And Face... sorry, great actor but he's not the ladies man. You know there is going to be a problem when the strongest member of the group is the non-actor - BA. And he's not great. Murdoch... just a total lamer. The miscasting is evident without seeing the prior history this story has seen. As a remake that didn't need to be remade, it's a disgrace. The IMDb rating is badly overblown and most generously above 6. If you go to other sites you'll see a far lower rating and for good reason. This is unfortunately a poor B movie. Watch at your own risk. The opening of the film wastes time on a mediocre back story. And then it's padded run time with the team envisioning success needlessly. All the famous lines are used to recreate the characters but so poorly that all you can think is "it's -insert name actor here- artificially uttering the lines made famous in trademark style." The team goes into Baghdad and let the ridiculous bravado begin. Don't say you weren't warned.
