alihandemiral I am kind of a person that supports a remake when there is room for improvement in the original picture. And Romero's The Crazies is just the right film to get remade. I've seen a few horror remakes that are exceptionally brilliant such as Alexandre Aja's remake of Wes Craven classic "The Hills Have Eyes" and Zack Snyder's remake of Romero's "Dawn of the Dead", although The Crazies is not as brilliant, it still has a fresh breath of air compared to the original. The acting is quite good, although i have a problem with Timothy Olyphant being a sheriff- again! The dude is still Sheriff Seth Bullock from HBO's amazing western drama "Deadwood; he walks the same, he talks the same and he has the exact same quick temperement that Seth Bullock has. Joe Anderson - who i first got to know in ABC's short lived but quite entertaining horror series "The River" and quickly remarked "Damn! he would make a good Kurt Cobain in a biopic!" - is a pretty original supporting character and is the only unique character to watch in the film in my opinion. The visuals are the best thing about the movie, the DOP saves the film from being a typical outbreak horror film with just the same old storyline and same old jumpscares.. The Crazies is definitely a feast for the eye.
cinemajesty "The Crazies" directed by Breck Eisner and arguably his most competently executed feature to date, follows loosely the George A. Romero's movie from 1973, taking a tricky twist on the zombie horror genre, which had been to spoiled for the years come by the October 2010 releasing "The Walking Dead", where this movie keeps its distance from the approaching menace, almost invisible are the transformations of the infected humans that the leading couple has to encounter, performed respectively as relentless functioning work unit actress Radha Mitchell and Timothy Olyphant, whom's convincing on-screen relationship in extreme situations of terror elevate "The Crazies" to an constant urgency-preaching thriller of 90 minutes worth the watch for genre lovers.© 2017 Felix Alexander Dausend (Cinemajesty Entertainments LLC)
DesertDogMedia Title: The Crazies Condensed Storyline: Remake of the 1973 movie of the same title. A small town in Iowa has their water supply infected with a biological toxin which causes everyone to go insane. Notable Acting: The focus sits more on the three main protagonists of David, Judy and Russell than the fact of zombies, but this movie is similar to the TV show 'The Walking Dead' as the movie is more about what the people do when they are faced with odds of this kind compared to just focusing on the zombies. Noticeable Camera work:Graphics: The CGI nuclear explosion was nicely done, being the only piece of CGI in the movie. Incorrect Science: The sheriff pulls a new Zippo lighter from a box on display, he lights it first time. Zippo lighters are stored without lighter fluid for safety reasons. Drinking water isn't used for watering crops as drinking water is too 'soft' for plants. The light from the nuclear blast would have blinded the survivors as they tried to look at it, this is why scientists wear blackout goggles to protect their eyes while they are looking at nuclear explosions. Nuclear explosions cause inverted windstorms as the air rushes to the explosion site to fill the vacuum created by the super heat air rising. The EMP created by the blast would fry all electronics near it, causing the truck's headlights to stop working Overall Feel: I am generally not all too much of a zombie movie fan, but this is one of those movies which I like because it shows how far people will go to survive, this movie also has a similar vibe to '28 Days Later' showing how the Military have responded to this outbreak as well. I enjoyed the characters in this movie and I enjoyed the plot. There isn't much I downgrade this movie for, apart from not having all too many creative angles and have a few pieces of incorrect science. It is a good horror thriller movie, but there isn't too much thriller aspect to it as I do not fear for the safety of David or the main characters, as I know they are going to make it out alive, but in saying this I was surprised to see Russell get killed towards the end, but I was expecting it at the same time as he was too much of a loose cannon.
Peter Pluymers I still have the habit never to read a brief description of a film in advance, let alone I would watch the trailer. In most cases the most crucial things are being told or shown in such a way that most of the surprises are screwed up more or less. In case of a blockbuster it doesn't really matter in most cases, since the content is usually known. With movies like "The Crazies" you'll start with a complete ignorance and it can sometimes be a pleasant surprise. Based on the movie poster (which I find very intriguing though) and the genre, I was ready to be overwhelmed.I must admit that the opening scene immediately gave me high hopes. Beautifully filmed and subtly supported by an appropriate soundtrack of Johnny Cash ("We'll Meet Again"). The first half hour was extremely good. A beautifully portrayed image of a small town in the U.S.. A village where everyone knows each other, with its traditions. A village where the local police still raises an admonishing finger because somebody is shooting after the hunting season and other trivialities. The main characters are introduced immediately : Sheriff David Napping and his pregnant wife Judy and deputy Russell Clank. The performances of these three were extremely successful. The moment the first signs of an epidemic occur won't take long and is convincing. Slowly the mystery unravels bit by bit and the sheriff and his assistant realize that they're in deep sh*t. And then you realize that it's again a zombie-like/epidemic-catastrophe story. The only difference is that the zombies are not more than comatose residents of the community, who transform into aggressive creatures with a "killing spree" mood after drinking the contaminated water. The fact remains that "The Crazies" is above the standard, compared to other horror movies. It's excellent in terms of imaging, dialogues and acting. But after a while the clichés are piling up in such amount that it eventually starts to irritate.Of course, the army shows up to rectify their mistake. They try to cover this whole mess up and start to wipe this community off the map. The sheriff escapes death an awful lot of times in the nick of time. And as always people make wrong decisions. Why bother telling someone to stay at some place. You know that he/she will eventually leave to have a look at something. Then there are the predictable situations. You know in advance already who ultimately will survive. And the end will be a deja-vu situation in other words everything will start all over again ! The biggest disappointment was the lack of tension. The gore part was absent. Only a heap of dead-bodies and the cold blooded liquidation of civilians by the U.S. army was kind of horrifying. Fake blood was apparently very expensive at that time cause it's used so scarce. And shocking scares were nonexistent. That's why this really wasn't a Horror / Drama to me, but rather a Thriller/Drama. Disillusionment. The end was also disappointing and felt as if they made it up quickly.Final conclusion: not bad, but nothing new. Some haunting images and moments (f.e. the pitchfork) but mostly annoying hackneyed clichés and situations.More reviews at http://opinion-as-a-moviefreak.blogspot.be/
