reaseltbim I can Appreciate what James Franco was going for in here and i can appreciate the love for the original movie and the love for the underground cult following that this movie has and the story behind it. I Can see that James Franco had the best intentions when making this movie and he tried his best at playing tommy, and for the most part, it works and it was a great performance. He really is the best thing about the movieBut I have to admit that i felt underwhelmed when watching this. the movie didn't cover some of the most important parts of the book and some of the stuff they did cover was kind of anticlimactic, I was hoping for a funnier movie that showed more of the background behind the making of the room and not just a remake of those scenes in the movie. I was hoping for a closer look at the lives of the people making the movie and the people behind the camera. but we barely got any of that. I can understand they only have a certain amount of time to tell this story but i was kind of baffled by some of the things they chose to do and some of the things they left out. I also did not like how they changed so much from some of the aspects of the story, It is one thing to not have enough time to film everything and they are constricted by time, but why did they have to make up stuff? why create fictional events on a movie based on real life? it just didnt make much sense. the movie was okay but it wasn't the greatest retelling i was hoping for
jsph_calabrese Taking on the "worst movie ever" as source material was quite an ambitious risk for James Franco. He stayed in character the entire shoot, including while he directed, and opines it to be "the first time ever that a director was directing himself in a movie, playing a character that was a director directing himself in a movie." His efforts here could be perceived as either gimmicky or brilliant. I personally think it's the latter, and probably his best work to date, both as actor and director.I found myself surprised by the crowd's roars of laughter through the entire runtime of an opening night showing. It certainly is a hilarious movie, but it is equally as much a drama. The Disaster Artist is about dreaming, creating, and failing. It's about the unlikely connectivity of outsiders and a lesson in true friendship. It's a story of overcoming rejection by learning to accept yourself. Enjoy it anyway you please, but pay close attention to the nuances and you may notice a subtle vein of profound sadness flowing throughout.
Paul Magne Haakonsen While I can't really claim to be much of a fan of "The Room", and only having seen it once, then it was actually good fun to watch "The Disaster Artist". And it was fun to get a deeper insight into how "The Room" came around to be, and have a look at whom the people were behind the characters.James Franco was doing an amazing job as Tommy Wiseau, and his performance really carried the movie quite nicely. Actually, I will say that James Franco really nailed the performance here and captured the essence, mannerisms and mimics of Tommy Wiseau phenomenally well.I am sure that "The Disaster Artist" will do quite well, and add to the cult legacy that is "The Room".Aside from James Franco then they also had a great ensemble of supporting cast and cameo appearances which added spice to the movie. While "The Disaster Artist" certainly was entertaining, I doubt that I will return to watch it a second time. Why? Well, the movie just didn't seem to have enough contents to support multiple viewings.
Kakarot89 Unlike a lot of these one star reviewers on imdb, I actually do love The Room. I have it on DVD and watch it whenever I need a pick-me-up. Some people go to bars, I watch The Room (sober, I might add). When I learned there was a book by Greg Sestero, I decided to pick it up and read through it. The book is hysterical and makes Tommy out to be an interesting albeit weird guy. When I learned they were making a movie out of the book with James Franco, I was skeptical but thought it might still be fun.Boy, was I wrong. The Disaster Artist is the worst kind of bad film: an unfunny comedy. I didn't laugh one time watching this movie. James Franco's impersonation played like an impersonation of Johnny from The Room. I know a lot of you are thinking "It's the same guy." No, if you go on YouTube and watch some Tommy Wiseau videos, he's much stranger in person than his onscreen persona. There's a bunch of drama added in like some go nowhere plot line about Malcolm in the Middle, or the love interest thrown in because...reasons. Seriously? There wasn't enough REAL LIFE drama for these writers to work with? Maybe they were too stoned reading the book that they missed a lot of the great moments like how Tommy was such a pain that he made two cinematographers quit? There's also the time Greg found Tommy's license only to discover all the information on it is fake. Let's not forget how one of the executive producers was dead at the time of filming. If you're a fan of The Room, skip this film and go pick up the book. It's funnier and will give you so much more insight into the production of the best worst movie ever made.
