Frankenstein sequels are always fun to watch, even the ones that aren't as great as the first two, like this one for example.Ghost of Frankestein (1942) its a pretty good sequel, it may not be as chilling, riveting, captivating or enjoyable as the first film or even the previous sequels, but its good enough that you wont be disappointed, the only thing that Frankenstein fans may not like its that Boris Karloff isn't the monster in this one, the monster in this film is played by Lon Chaney Jr and he does a great job I must say, he isn't as comfortable in the role as Karloff was but he is pretty decent, after all, he is the great Lon Chaney Jr.Its well made, for the most part, it never becomes boring or tedious, even if some scenes are not executed in the best of ways, like the ending, its not that its a bad ending but its somewhat underwhelming. Of course it may bother you that many people who died in the previous film are here alive and well, and some of the plot points felt a bit forced, but overall I think its a delightful watch. Its well paced, it features some really good performances, like Bela Lugosi as Ygor, and delivers all the goods you would expect from an Universal horror film.

Universal pictures "The Ghost of Frankenstein" was but another link in a long chain of successful sequels that helped movie audiences forget the "horrors of the present" such as WWII. Often times these films had a stock of actors like the John Ford acting troupe playing different characters in different films. In this one veteran actor Lionel Atwell portrays the jealous Dr. Theodore Bohmer who seeks to upstage Cedric Hardwicke (Ludwig Frankenstein) and bring the Frankenstein monster back to full strength. It all seems to be one big family affair as Hardwicke plays Basil Rathbone (Wolf Frankenstein) aka the son of Frankenstein's brother. To make matters worse Atwell dies in this one but re-appears as another character (the mayor) in the sequel "House of Frankenstein". Bela Lugosi (Ygor) of "Son of Frankenstein" re-appears as Ygor and this time wants a new body for his devious brain. Evelyn Ankers who played Lon Chaney Jr. (The Wolfman) girl friend portrays Elsa Frankenstein (Hardwicke's wife). Lon Chaney Jr. sheds his Wolfman garb and appears as the Frankenstein Monster. It's all very confusing.... but somehow the cast and the writers make it all work ... and we can all kick back and forget all the horrible things that are really going on in the real world.

This a a sequel to Son of Frankenstein. It is a great movie. It has a great story line. It has great acting. It also has great special effects. Do not think because something is old that can not be good. This is one of the scariest movies ever made. It is very intense. Frankenstein meets the wolf man better. House of Frankenstein is also better. House of Dracula is also better. This is scarier then Frankenstein (1931). And very few movie are scarier then that one. It is scarier then The bride of Frankenstein. If this movie does not scar you then no movie will. This is scarier then Son of Frankenstein. The monster wants a new brain. So find the son of Doctor Frankenstein who is also a scientist. Very scary.

Ygor resurrects The Monster and brings him to Ludwig Frankenstein for help. Ludwig wants to replace The Monster's brain with a brain that does good deeds. Ygor wants to give the Monster his brain. I thought this sequel wasn't bad. It keeps your attention throughout and offers some decent suspense. They also learned from their mistake from Son of Frankenstein, trimming it from over 90 minutes back to over 60. As technically sound as this sequel is, this series was really beginning to feel tired. Karloff is no longer here and the magic is gone. It really seemed like they were doing anything to keep making money off the franchise. The Monster is no longer special. Lon Chaney Jr. is pretty good as The Monster, but he can't fill Karloff's shoes. It didn't feel genuine at all. Bela Lugosi is a lot of fun and was one of the main reasons why this was as watchable as it was. Cedric Hardwicke is solid as Ludwig. He's always reliable. Lionel Atwill returns as a different character, which I didn't understand. Evelyn Ankers is one of my favorite horror actresses, so I'm biased. This is perfectly acceptable for a sequel, but the thrills are gone. This series was running out of gas at this juncture. It was far from being done though. 6.3/10
