D Lynn This is my first IMDb review prompted by the absolute worst film I have ever seen: the "Haunting of Molly Hartley".It is my intent to learn the screenwriter's identity because I will never watch another movie in which this author participates. The film's producers clearly have an agenda and it transparently overshadows the plot at every turn. Most movies, even horror movies, evoke a sort of justice or resolution, if only for a key character with whom viewers come to identify. This storyline breaks the rule, leaving the viewer only with a nauseating sense that the screenwriter and the film's producers have concocted the story merely to promote a Luciferian worldview. The "horror" in this film does not come in the form of psychological suspense, in creative plot twists or even in clever visual effects. The horror in the "Haunting of Molly Hartley" is purely in its ideology: People do not have freewill. Christians are freaks. God is absent. Satanic power is rewarding --- and that's true even if one resists evil, as does the main character.Molly Hartley, the lead character, is a prep school student about to turn 18 when she begins to suspect that her criminal mother, who is confined to a mental hospital, may have formed a pact with the Devil at her birth. At first, the story comes off as your typical made-for-TV series of predictable plot gimmicks but it is in how the characters evolve --- and how the story resolves for Molly --- that carries it from harmless cliché to a faith-bashing, evil-glorifying propaganda device. The storyline builds sympathy and concern for Molly Hartley's struggle to come to terms with her past and her "destiny" upon her impending 18th birthday. A scene at the prep school in which a teacher proposes the Bible as literature indicates the screenwriter's willingness to go out of his/her way to promote the idea that the Bible is not only passé but people of faith are nutcases. The scene could have been cut from the movie with no harm to the plot yet its presence is notable in that the producers apparently felt it necessary to go out of their way to use characters from the movie as a vehicle to convey spite. In short, the way in which this film is written and produced does nothing for the horror genera but it does everything it possibly can to stir real-world controversy.I regret that I watched this movie on Lifetime Movie Network. Until the network pulls the film --- which it has repeatedly aired since its debut in 2008 --- I view LMM and its sponsors as endorsers of HATE SPEECH.Make no mistake: This is not a horror or suspense film in any true sense. It is propaganda and proselytizing under the false guise of "entertainment".
Nina Anderson I'll admit, this is a poor excuse for a horror film, but it still isn't completely awful. Loads of people will be disappointed with this film, and so I seriously hope you know what you're in for.17 year old Molly was stabbed by her mother who is now in a mental hospital. Molly lives with her dad and attends a new school, but strange things start to happen to her.Yes, sounds cliché, and it is, but there are some decent moments in it. The problem with this film is it opens with a fairly impressive scene, but the tension just fails after that and the whole thing goes downhill.Normally, I wouldn't have watched this film. The only reason I did was because of Haley Bennett as the lead role. Yes, that is the ONLY reason. She has a wonderful horror movie scream and does a good job of acting scared, and she is in fact the highlight of the movie. The other characters aren't fleshed out enough and the way they pop into Molly's life with different reasons gets a little confusing. This film didn't have a huge budget and so I can forgive the lack of gore and special effects which I was expecting, but the script is rather weak and the plot is pretty thin so the supposed twist ending is predictable. Oh, and the ending scene will confuse some and outrage others, depending on if you understand it. Long story short, it isn't very good.Despite all the negative things, some people will enjoy this film. I am one of those people, I could definitely watch it again and don't regret buying it. Not one of my favourites, but if you're looking for a cheesy horror movie to bitch about, then it fits the bill. If you want a true horror with lots of blood and screams and special effects, then this isn't even close to what you're looking for.All in all, I liked this film enough to buy it and watch again. I'm giving it six stars because although it severely lacks the shock factor to make it a horror, it still qualifies as one of those bad movies you watch on Saturday night. Just remember that you may still be very disappointed, so lower your expectations.
mathew9889 without a doubt the worst movie i have ever watched, i've been up at 4 in the morning with a netflix account so I have seen some bad movies. i actually signed up for an account just so i could warn the rest of humanity of the teenage drama fest that they tried to pass off as horror. normally i hate when b-rate horror movies resort to nudity and sex to make up for lack of plot, shotty acting, no budget, no original scary content, competent writers, and so on but geez half way through the movie i was begging for something to liven up this crappy twilight knock off. it boggles the mind how they ever made it to production without someone raising a single question as to what the heck is actually happening in the end of this movie. basically they took 5 minutes of a hot girl walking through the woods then dubbed in 2 hours worth of icarly or some other terrible preteen show tack on 5 minutes of twilight then wrap it all up with the ending from legally blonde. i have saved you 2 hours of your life
Raymond .. it's not that bad. 3,7 average really is not justified. I'm a horror movie fan, but I'm not a big fan of gore. I check here before I watch, so I can pass the ones that mostly rely on graphic shock images. Up until Saw and Hostel I could usually watch pretty much anything, but since these movies I have passed at least 50 % of the new "horror movies" that only seem to try and go crazier with the gore.Because of the latest "horror movies", I can easily understand why a movie like this just doesn't do it anymore. There is basically zero gore and very few scares. The movie doesn't even try to push the envelope any further, but tells an fairly interesting story with a strong religious undertone.Having said all this, the movie is not a complete winner either. It's a small movie, could be an episode of a series. It's not exactly Masters of Horror material (lack of gore and nudity), but the production values are somewhat similar. The movie looks OK, but is not dazzling. The acting is OK, but never much better. The script is OK, but nothing mind boggling. The CGI in one scene is just bad.Probably the biggest problem is that the movie is clearly made for teens, but it does not pack any of the ingredients teens of today really want from an horror movie. I'm not a teen anymore, so I appreciated the story, but it being clearly made for younger audience was a bit of turn off. Soundtrack is a bit of an problem too, you get the occasional upbeat college rock tunes, which don't quite fit in the somewhat serious tone of the whole. There has been talk that this movie is kind of anti-Christian. It could be seen this way if you get easily offended by the subject. For me this was quite interesting storywise, as there are rarely movies of this kind. The religion, Christianity and possible satanism are usually portrayed on a more symbolic level rather than with everyday people. I don't think it tries to feed a certain religious view. It just tells a story.I wouldn't rent this for a big money or go see this in a theater, but if you catch it on TV and have nothing else to do, give it a chance, it's not that bad.
