2karl- Believe it or not, this is actually a pretty good movie. I was annoyed with a few aspects of the movie such as my extreme annoyance with Jay Baruchel. But I think Nic Cage carried the movie. He is a very talented actor and he proves it in each movie he's in whether it's good or bad. This is about wizard named Balthazar who lives in modern day New York City. He has been searching for many centuries for the perfect kid who would be finally be his apprentice. He finally meets that kid and he trains him to be the one to save the world. The acting is pretty good. Of course Nic Cage is more than good Acting is better than expected. Nicholas Cage is quite good more serious and less over the top as he try to stop Horvath from getting to kill the blood line of Merlin and bring his love back from the depts. Of hell in the proclen Russian dolls AD, good sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) has been searching for over 1000 years for the next Prime Merlinean, the only one who has the power to destroy Morgana and her accomplice Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina) and to stop their plan to raise dead evil sorcerers (Morganians) and take over the world. Then one day in the year 2000, 10-year old David Stutler (Jake Cherry) wanders into Balthazar's Manhattan shop, the Arcana Cabana, and Balthazar realizes that he's found him. David's life is about to change as he becomes The Sorcerer's Apprentice. . I was also impressed at Alfred Molina. Jay Baruchel is the geek hero he is ordinary person not known he is Merlin's apprentice he learns to control his powers after 10 years of baltzar first mission to find the last of Merlin's but he gets caught and driven back to hell so went he gets released he has to teach how to use the ring and make objects appear from nothing and to stop veronica from unleashing hell from the People compare this movie for some reason to Harry Potter. I'll say now that this is no Potter. This film is no masterpiece like the Potter series but it still is good.Overall, this is a pretty good family movie. I would turn a deaf ear to the critics and watch this. I rate this film 8/10. Overall, this is entertaining and well done. The effects are not revolutionary but at least fit in to the story rather than detract from it. No violence or mayhem - its OK for a younger to general audience. The script is pleasant if predictable - does the nerd hero rise to the task and vanquish the evil forces. There could have been more historical witches besides Abigail Williams of Salem. There are some humorous bits but not too many.
chasdj The Sorcerer's Apprentice is intended for All Viewing Audiences and I would easily call it a film for "family and friends." We find Merlin, His Apprentices, Sorcery and Magic, Betrayal ... and Love. The film is well cast, the story well written, and the performances well acted. Nicholas Cage portrays a loyal Apprentice, Alfred Molina once Cage's friend and rival, and Jay Baruchel a modern day Apprentice. Jay plays "Dave," who at age 10 is thrust by fate or destiny into the path of Cage's "Balthazar Blake." Young Dave is utterly unprepared for even a brief brush with the world of Magic and shyness trends toward the nerdy, geeky, path that also leads toward Science. Jay Baruchel was new to me. I found his portrayal of Dave, now 20, to be excellent acting, as both Magic and Love re-enter Dave's life unexpectedly. The Sorcery, special effects, and cast take the viewer on a fast paced adventure into serious matters "spell-bound" together with fantasy and science. Different worlds, or two sides of the same coin? I highly recommend "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and hope this review is useful in your viewing decision.
Barry-stanley All the negative reviews are focusing on the acting performances of Cage and Baruchel, which, I agree, aren't the best but at the end of the day this film wasn't made to be a contender for any acting Oscar nominations. What you get I is a good, fun movie that lets you escape from the usual day to day rubbish and that doesn't pretend to be anything more that what it is.I'm not saying this because I'm a Nicholas Cage fan, which I'm most certainly not, while I think he is a talented actor I've only really enjoyed him in Con Air, Face Off and Lord if War.Tell me, who didn't like Micky Mouse in Fantasia, or never dreamt about being a witch or a wizard when they were a kid or loved watching dungeons and dragons cartoons, this movie takes you right back.
Jan Newson I watched this with my family and we all thought it was great. There a lot of laugh out loud moments and the special effects are fantastic. The story is enjoyable though of course there has to be a love interest. Nic Cage is good as is the actor who plays Dave.(BTW I can't believe the nasty remarks on this site about this actor; his looks, voice, etc.what is wrong with these people!). Dave is a nerdy physicist who had met the sorcerers as a boy and mentions a kind of breakdown when he meets them again as a young man, which sort of explains his awkwardness maybe? The actor plays the part well and Dave's training in magic is long and arduous. There's a great scene with the mops and water, just like the cartoon film with Mickey Mouse. Alfred Molina is great as always, and the character of the showy English, punk magician is brilliant (Dave asks him if he is out of Depeche Mode). Give it a try I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
