Ken Hackenberg I knew this movie wasn't going to be good, but with Val Kilmer starring, I expected at least bad. Visually, this movie has no special effects, no slick camera work, nothing conceptually interesting. I thought it was made for TV and even if it were, I would expect more. From the very start, the scenes you have seen before. You cannot ignore the little girl's overly applied heavy mascara, and her voice has no drama whatsoever. Now, as the plot thickens and you begin to learn the abilities of this guy, he appears and disappears in scenes like a Bewitched series scene. There is no magic, special transition, or drama applied beyond the actors reactions who see him. Secondly, this happened in at least two scenes, when you find someone hanging by their neck or appears to have suffered some kind of mortal event, the first thing you do is check to see if they are still alive like check their pulse. In this movie they save time, one look and no the guy is dead, let's move on. So at the end, are we supposed to like any of these people at all? The most seemingly moral character (the desk clerk who protested their torturing) should have gotten killed last but he was the second one to go. I don't get it. The character build was actually really good, you learn a bit about each cop and what they do, who they are,... ruined by the shoddy camera and plot. The movie could have been much more with that as a start. The little girl? You really don't get to know her at all and she just reminds me of Heather O'Rourke from Poltergeist. The real torture was waiting for something fantastic to happen and a big finale, but ended up just begging for the credits to finish. The transformations at the end again, there is no transition just fading away. Stupid. Bottom line, there is no magic going on visually, nothing stimulating to heighten your fears and get you in the center of what is going on. Really I didn't even find Val Kilmer that creepy except for his long hair.
dawulf While I agree with one other reviewer in the fact that Val Kilmer is an excellent actor, and he can play creepy so well..the movie was lacking for me.It was too predictable. Inside of the first 10 minutes, I was already calling out key points in the plot because you can see where it's going. This could have been a great movie. I would have loved to have seen it well written and with more focus on Val Kilmer. In all, it's worth watching on cable some night if there is nothing else on or you are a huge Kilmer fan. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it personally. Only reason I did was I couldn't find anything else.
Tom There's nothing new here, but it did grab my attention. It's actually quite suspenseful, but the movie did take it's time to build up to the suspense.I've seen a lot of movies like this and it's always about revenge with a supernatural twist. Then the revenge part turns sour. Of course, there are gruesome blood scenes as found in typical horror style. It's a little eyrie, but there is really no wow factor to it. At the end of the movie, I completely forgot about it and got food with friends. If that's how I reacted, then you know it wasn't really a good movie. Watchable if you have the time, but it's not worth the $15 admission price to the movies.I'm a big fan of Val Kilmer and he did a superb job of acting. Deep and mysterious.
mollidew I read some of the reviews first and it is like almost all horror/thrillers, most people don't really like them. Not all are going to be on the par of winning Oscars and how many ever do??? This one I classify as a paranormal thriller rather than hardcore horror even though there was some blood and guts to it. People should quit comparing movies to each other because you will find similarities to other movies because so many have been made. It's not important to a review. I did not think Val's performance was bad in fact he was what I liked most about the movie. He played it perfectly as he always does. The supporting cast was fine. Most of them had small parts so there was no way for them to stand out much except Black.Someone mentioned the photo of the little girl. This is only a guess because they don't really tell you but her father had been there. He is most likely the one who took the picture and I think he stepped away to the car or somewhere else momentarily to come back and find her missing. The whole movie had a really eerie feel and it left me thinking WOW. Even though it looked lower budget I thought for the genre it did a good job. It doesn't deserved to be rated a one or a two because it was better than that. The traveler and Detective Black were the focal points of the story and both of them did a wonderful job where there was little in the story to sustain it. There was only the run down police station, lonely and quiet on Christmas Eve.
