Batuhan Batuhan Yet another variety of Dr. Caligari and unfortunately not a very good one. A traumatic event that is revealed at the end, a very beautiful girl and a traumatized protagonist with mental issues. Like Perks of Being a Wallflower. They all started with Dr. Caligari. I think Mel was interested in photography because the writer wanted the young viewers who spend a lot of time on instagram and social media emphatize with Mel and thus make the failure of that "perfect couple" reasonable. None of the characters were very authentic or interesting. The writer could have given the characters a bit more depth but I guess it's not very necessary considering the targeted viewers. It had a nice climax. Could have been much more dramatic to the viewers if there were more material they could relate to the characters. Dreaming about going away visiting a place on a random photo... Not a very original scheme right?
erikacunanan29 MORE REVIEWS AT booksequalhappiness.blogspot.comREVIEW: I liked the story. It was interesting and kind of mysterious. It will make you want to know what happened to Sidney to make him run away and hide. I really liked the story because it will show you that there's only so much a person could take.Majority of the scenes in the first part wasn't really explained much up until the latter half of the movie which made it feel too long. The thing that probably messed things up was the incredibly confusing timeline. It was kind of hard to differentiate which timeline was currently being shown (since there were three and Logan Lerman looked kind of the same for two of them). The cinematography was beautiful. There were beautiful shots here and there especially of Elle Fanning and Logan Lerman.SHOULD YOU WATCH IT: Yes, if you want something interesting and heartbreaking (has a bit of a slow pacing). WOULD I WATCH IT AGAIN: Maybe someday.
John Doe This should have been a really interesting film. The acting is good, the cast is good and the premise is good. But the filmmakers have chosen to keep jumping back and forth in time, which made it really hard to get into the film, particularly in the beginning. I kept watching in anticipation of a great twist. Well there was a twist and I didn't see it coming, which is a good thing I suppose. The problem is, the twist was not very original. I was left thinking, "oh, that again". And it's not a cool "Sixth Sense" type twist either. In fact, the only reason it's a twist at all is because of the jumping time line. The whole purpose of the switches back and forth are solely to keep you from finding out one important piece of information. Personally, because the twist is so weak I think the film would have worked better if it had been played out in a linear time line. And it could have done with being 20 minutes shorter. There was too much padding and yet some of the more interesting aspects, like Sidney Hall's disappearance were skated over to avoid revealing the twist. Instead we're left with a drawn out subplot about Sidney finding out who his mystery admirer is at high school. This subplot added nothing to the main story.Overall, for me this feels like a real missed opportunity. There's a good film in here somewhere, but in attempting to make it more arty and mysterious the filmmakers missed a trick in my opinion, making it slow and laborious instead.
plmillernc-970-189682 This is a movie that tells a story of a young man who is a talented writer, possessed by that one abiding talent and one sweet, star crossed love. How these play out over years of fame, horror, loss and search for a dream that has no address is the substance of the story. Told out of sequence, the story requires characters we must care about and all of the main characters deliver. Elle Fanning is particularly moving as a romantic young girl growing up in the unromantic adult world of hard truths and painful realities. The mysteries at the heart of the story telegraph their solutions, but the impact is only slightly lessened as they play out over decades of wounded lives. A well done tale.
