opossumsarefurreal The worst part about the movie, isn't the incredibly slow scenes.. where you are shouting at the film "OKAY I GET IT!! MOVE ON!!" It's that you WANT to watch the actual movie!! It's like you're waiting on the film to start and it never truly does. Instead you are stuck staring at clouds and listening to piano music. Is the music pretty? Yes. But am I watching this film FOR the music? No. I want to see some aliens. I want to see more of the story. I don't need bombs exploding to get my attention, but I DO need more than the same scene repeated over and over.. and over.. and over. I mean- essentially we just stare at ScarJo's body and face the entire time with no real progression to the story line. That's not a problem, because she is beautiful.. right? It's really low hanging fruit to just have naked people in a movie for the sake of having naked people in a movie. I assume anyone watching this movie and "LOVING" it.. just really loves to see some boobies/booties and everything in between. And everyone else is trying to just be as pretentious as the director. I have seen art in movies.. and real, *moving* music paired with really emotional scenes. This was just.. so boring. So .. so boring. I found myself wanting to open my tablet and check my email.. go make another coffee. It could not hold my attention and I usually love indie films. This one just did not do it for me.
susiewicket Spoiler alert. The movie intrigued me enough that I bought and read the book. If you read the book, you will see why the movie could not and did not follow it more closely. In the book, Isserley was a 4-legged animal (highly advanced ape, I think) modified by extensive and painful surgery into something a person who was not looking very hard could think a human. In the book, Isserley's victims didn't disappear into a pool of black liquid; Isserley's workmates prepared them in a lengthy and gruesome process. There were no motorcycles in the book. There was no abandoned house in the book. There was a spaceship in the book. Isserley managed to kill the rapist in the book. As usual for me, after reading a science fiction, I found the movie - well - different. However, Scarlett Johansen pulled it off masterfully, as she always seems to do.
samturner-51845 Watch the highlights on YouTube. Better yet, google the pictures of Scarlett and be done with the idea of watching this film.
jetsandzeppelins Where to begin with this movie... Saying the plot drags is an almost unforgivable understatement. It was easy enough to mostly figure out what was going on early in the movie and then the plot just repeats itself multiple times, telling you things you already know with painfully long takes of mostly aesthetically boring scenes, or gratuitous scenes of Scarlett Johnasson getting naked. Near the end, the twist is a variation of a predictable trope that doesn't lead anywhere meaningful and then the movie dies with a whimper. There is little character development, and almost no dialog. Scarlett Johansson's character, really the only character in the movie, is incredibly flat. It's logical for the character she plays, but that character's story just isn't interesting enough to dedicate an hour an 48 minutes to.The beginning of the movie has enough mystery to keep it interesting for a little while, and there are a couple striking, visually interesting scenes which pull it off of an otherwise well deserved 1 star rating for me. I feel this movie would have been much better as a short film, and all important elements could have been fit into 30 minutes.
