Andrew Pelechaty Normally when movies come out on DVD, they have a handful of deleted scenes, left out for obvious reasons. 'Anchorman' has taken this one step further. It has enough deleted/alternate scenes for a second movie, which brings us to 'Wake up Ron Burgundy'.What's more impressive is the material left out of the original is just as funny - at times even more - than 'Anchorman'. While some scenarios are repeated (the pool party, Ron and Veronica's date, Ron's practical jokes on Veronica, Ron's slide into depression after getting fired), WURB not only has a different plot - a group of robbers known as The Alarm Clock terrorize San Diego - it also builds on the characterisation alluded to in the original. In WURB, we learn about Brick's past, Veronica's motivation for becoming an anchorlady, the extent of Champ's homosexuality and his infatuation with Ron and more on Ed Harken and his troubled son. Some of the scenes deserve to be included in Anchorman folklore: Champ's hillariously awkward confession of love to Ron, Ron's inability to read the news without a teleprompter, and Ron's Mother Nature-loving (literatelly) mentor. My only criticism of this film is the narration, which sets the film up as a sequel to Anchorman, and feels a bit out of place. While it probably won't surpass the original as a comedy classic, it's a brilliant companion piece which is more than just a collection of deleted scenes, it's a movie in its own right.
Ace_of_Sevens Wake up, Ron Burgundy is allegedly made of deleted scenes from Anchorman, but while it's obvious how some scenes fit into the movie such as Ron's dangerous driving here leading to the parking scene in Anchorman, there's no way most of this would have ever fit. I assume a lot of last-minute re-shoots were involved. Some elements work. The Alarm Clock gang is hilarious. They are a group with political goals, but seem unclear on what they are and lack any sort of grand plan. The bit with Amy Poehler as a bank teller who refuses to give them any money because they are so inept as bank robbers is one of the best in the movie. Justin Long as Ed's sullen teenage son, Chris, and Chad Everett as Jess Moondragon, Ron's mentor who won't shut up about how inappropriately he loves nature, also have some very memorable bits. Note that none of these (fairly significant) characters are in Anchorman.Unfortunately, the movie is just a series of bits. It doesn't really come together. To some degree, this is to be expected in a movie assembled from deleted scenes, but it's more than that. The jokes get too much narrative priority, often leading to things that just don't fit in the context of the movie. Veronica Corningstone's personality is all over the place and Champ King's moment in the car goes on way too long, even though it starts well, for instance. This really hurts suspension of disbelief as it never really establishes any rules to play by.This is a serious problem, but I'm giving the movie a 6 anyway, mainly because it made me laugh so hard I nearly vomited on several occasions, like when Brick explained what he was eating or any of Paul's attempts to explain the manifesto. In short, this is a great way to present deleted scenes. It isn't a great movie.
Lawson Anchorman was my favorite Will Ferrell movie before Blades of Glory, so ever since I learned of this DVD "movie" years ago, I had wanted it. However it was unfortunately only available as a bonus disc to the original movie and not readily available on region 1, and it wasn't even released on region 3. Hence I was quite happy to finally buy this (with Anchorman) in Oz.Was it worth the wait? Yes, and no. I hadn't known beforehand that this "movie" was made of various cut extended scenes and deleted scenes and such, and so it's not quite as coherent as a normal movie. Still, there's effort put into the cutting and pasting, and the result is indubitably more fun (and easier) than watching the individual scenes as standalones the way they are typically relegated as in DVD bonus features, which I don't even bother to watch, usually. So yes, I'm quite happy that I got this DVD, but I doubt it would be of any interest to anyone who didn't like (or watch) Anchorman. 6
movieman_kev A collection of Deleted scenes and alternative takes, edited together and with added voice-over to make it appear to take place after the events of the first. Pretty cool idea, but deleted scenes are left on the cutting room floor for a reason and this is further proof. As it's just not as funny as "Anchorman", and really let's face it THAT film wasn't exactly comedy gold either, so you get a 'movie' worse than one that was moderately funny. In my eyes that STILL puts it one or two notches above "Kicking and Screaming", or "Bewitched". Chross your fingers that "The Wedding Crashers" is a return to old school form (no pun intended) My Grade: D
