coolatheart I really like Diane Kruger, but Monica Bellucci in the original is terrific. It's certainly not a coincidence that the name of the restaurant in Wicker Park where Josh Hartnett overhears Diane Kruger's conversation is named Bellucci's!! That's real respect. The french version is full of comedy, this American remake has next to none. It's worth getting a copy of "Le Apartment" if you enjoy this.
lexva5 This film is a very good adaption of the French film L Appartement. Actually the Hollywood version is an improvement of the original. In Wicker Park the main characters as played by Josh Hartnett, Diane Krueger, Rose Byrne and Matthew Lillard are likable despite their double life or shortcomings which they might be harbouring. One actually cares about the characters and the intriguing story which is told partially in flashback, unlike the French film where the characters all seemed to be Jerks. The way the film progresses, reflects the disjointed mind of the main protagonists as some sort of misfortune seems to keep the two main lovers apart whilst a second romance continuously fails to materialize. This film and the original French one apparently are a loose adaption of the Shakespeare comedy a Midsummer's Night dream. The French film is certainly not a comedy but this one is imbued with a certain lightheartedness despite the proceedings, that makes it very palpable. A recommended watch, characters continue to live on after the film ends
kmcghan-34007 I absolutely love this movie!! I have seen it dozens of times and it never gets old. Such an unexpected gem of a movie. Suspense and romance tied up into one intelligently done flick! Great acting and the music is perfect. I love the Scientist by Coldplay,so that sealed the deal for me!! I really wish there were more movies done like this. It is one that really keeps your mind open and alert because you have to somewhat pay attention. It has some unexpected twists and is not too predictable. I often recommend this movie to friends especially friends who like chick flick and thriller type movies. This is a good one!One of my top favorites.
vincentlynch-moonoi The one thing that works here is Josh Hartnett. I don't know exactly how to explain it, but he just seems real and a really nice guy. Of course, for all I know he's not...but I enjoy watching him in films. The other thing that sort of works here are the other performances. Rose Byrne, Diane Kruger, and Matthew Lillard (in a more normal performance that how we usually see him) all do nicely. But to me, there's a huge problem that overshadows everything else. For me, the key to a good mystery is not making it too mysterious. And here I had the idea that the screenwriter and director were intentionally playing it real crafty, particularly with an excess of flashbacks, to the point that it got very confusing, particularly in the first half of the film. And to top it off, there is one scene that I felt was just one of the worst I've ever seen in any film -- when Harnett cries in a close-up. You can overdo the "he's very sensitive" routine, and that scene did. And, he's supposed to be overseas on a job and is risking that job by his love crisis. Geez! The film is creepy enough to hold your attention, but it could have been done just so much better, with less confusion. I'm tempted to give it only a 6, but tales of obsession are almost always intriguing, so I'll stick with a shaky 7.
