desertgypsygirl This is a two CD four part mini series, but I had the entire story figured out within the first hour. I knew every plot point, every turning point by then, and I pretty much watched the rest of it to see if I was right.I was. Any discerning movie watcher would be.WARNING - NO SPOILERS HERE, BUT I knew Mark's background and "story", who would kill whom and who would be surprised by it, and what legal arguments would be made in court (all the stupid mistakes as the story progressed gave THAT away,) I knew what the verdict would be, and I knew all that before the end of episode one.But even beyond that, the inciting incident was improbable. I mean, no 52 year old married woman would have sex with a (married) man she'd just met minutes before, whose name she didn't even know, especially not in a closet in an empty museum. By age 52, women no longer can claim the innocence of youth. By then, they know better, and have had enough experience with men to know where it can lead. Directly to TROUBLE, either short term or long term or both. I did learn something new, though - the physiological reason rape victims don't report. That was interesting.
fugufugu-36399 it makes sense from a female perspective.. she didn't report it because she didn't wanna be remembered as the one who got raped. and the rapist following her around is not so far fetched because we all do things that we don't understand and he couldn't help himself or something no matter how detrimental that could and did end up to be in the end. just think about the whole harvey weinstein situation ..hes smart, hes charming, creative, manipulative, abuses his power, couldn't help being himself despite the perpetual negative feedback he was getting from pretty much anyone around him ... and he got away with it for decades! women are too aware of how this works. Perjury ? thats nothing in the world we live.. She ends up believing in this mysterious guy because thats the kind of lie we are being fed by the happy go lucky movies... and whats behind a happy movie... anorexia, pain, "couch" casting, addictions. She wants to believe ... cause otherwise you're a negative loser... losing at life. For a short while life felt like a Nancy Meyers movie. And then life punches her over and over and she cannot punch back ... cause its not a Bruce Willis movie. The mysterious mess shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone because we all have ppl around us whos reality is different then everyone elses ... like totally different. And they love to be in the character and if you wanna call them out on it you end up feeling like you're abusing them or something... and it all turns into a massive tragedy. The series is great and thats that!:) I didn't even want to watch TV that night but it lured me in just from the whole vibe of it :) ...and her inner dialogue... the unspoken dialogue between Emily and her husband ... it melted my dark heart really. I hope she didn't get to live all the feelings shes expressing trough her face and demeanor on here! No supersmart ass lines needed, just life unfolding + the shock of having to accept what she cannot control + having to survive everything... And the humiliations we all go trough and our weakneses that bring us to our knees ...and we have to see each other like that and live with those images in our minds and souls and we don't even like to use the word soul cause we are not our moms but still... we have one that gets messed up over and over and we end up messing others up too and we have to hold in there cause what else can we do... other then the obvious.. or go on meds . And the cinematography is great and it makes me wanna live in London!
tlupejkis Though, I was in fact hoping to find a 'secret Sherlock' episode, I was happy with Apple Tree Yard as a whole.I see some complaints it was TOO SLOW. It only has 4 episodes, give it a chance, lol. Have a bit of patience. It had intrigue, lust, complicated family and marital relations. Humans that make poor choices and a question as to who is the villain. I loved the sets from just the Apple Tree Yard SW1 Alley to the chapel of the Commons. If people wanted Sherlock and didn't get it, they got a good mystery at least. On top of being a thriller and a damn good drama. You get an insanely intense and mind blowing finale.Emily Watson was great and the rest of the cast were certainly very good. Creepy ending...I hope for another series of this! 8/10
Prismark10 Apple Tree Yard is passed off as a racy bonk-fest with a twist. Dr Yvonne Carmichael (Emily Watson) is an unhappily married scientist. Her husband is cheating on her and one night she meets a mysterious, charismatic stranger who gives little away about himself, Mark Costley (Ben Chaplin) and they have passionate sex including a small backstreet alley, Apple Tree Yard. However when she is later raped by a work acquaintance, Yvonne feels out of her depth. Unable to turn to her husband, go to the police she confides in Costley. Both are later charged with murdering the rapist and Costley reveals their affair and blames her for putting him up to it.The serial had passion and mystery, it is an adaptation of Louise Doughty's novel. The film takes a turn with the rape scene and Yvonne later feels scared and vulnerable. The final episode is taken up mostly with the courtroom scenes as Yvonne and her husband put on a brave face to the public and the jury. The drama never really soared as far as I was concerned, you never felt sympathy for many of the characters. The rape scene was nasty and you always think Costley is going to be too shifty. There is a twist at the end between the two former lovers.
