Suradit Great News might remind one of the Mary Tyler Moore show ... with variations on the characters in the MTM Show ...Ted, the clueless news anchor and Rhoda, Phyllis, Lou and Sue Ann Nivens all contributing to the mayhem and lunacy surrounding the life of the central character, Mary Richards.Great News does have a fairly decent supporting cast. Actually, the supporting cast probably carries the show and they provide most of the comedy. It's rather hard to tell whether the central character is meant to be Katie Wendelson or her mother or whether it's just supposed to be mélange with no one being the focus. Katie (Briga Heelan), unfortunately, has been poorly cast and makes it seem that the rest of the cast has to struggle to keep the show afloat.Definitely could have been a better, funnier show based on the concept and the talent exhibited by most of the cast, but the overall result has become bland and borderline slapstick.Maybe if the parts played by Nicole Richie (Portia) and John Michael Higgins (Chuck) became more central and Katie and her mother became more peripheral it would help.
tjb As I write this, I'm only 4 episodes in and most shows need some more time to find their stride. Therefore, I'm being kind with my rating. I'm a big fan of 30 Rock and Tina Fey and you can see the heavy influences in Great News. Maybe its unfair to make so many comparisons to 30 Rock, but it feels like all of the unused ideas that never made it in that show's scripts wound up being written into this show. Many of the characters are lesser versions of their 30 Rock equivalents and by lesser, I mean less unique and likable. So far I find the main character Katie Wendelson (Briga Heelan) to be the weakest and most insufferable character. The jokes are 50/50 with what lands and what just feels like a forced-version of the comedic style which IMO is because the jokes aren't being delivered fast enough. The relationships between a lot of characters lack depth which may cause story issues down the road.I'd like to find something nice to say about Great Show because its not without potential. There were a few jokes so far that I actually found myself laughing out loud about. I've always liked the setting of a TV station and I do like the comedy style of the show. I hope the kinks get worked out in this show but if they don't, there's always Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Capt. Spastic I don't dislike this show. You can definitely see many of Robert Carlock's & Tina Fey's touches in the show. Tracey Wigfield & Briga Heelan both have had previous notable efforts and moderate successes, and really seem to be keeping extremely busy. Briga recently playing the great Heidi character on the Netflix series LOVE.Here's what bothers me about this show... Did they think we wouldn't notice? This show is a sliced and diced, chopped, pressed and reformatted version of 30 Rock.Tina Fey/Briga Heelan - Liz Lemon/Katie Wendelson John Michael Higgins/Tracy Morgan - Chuck Pierce/Tracey Jordan Jane Krakowski/Nicole Richie - Jenna Maroney/Portia Scott-Griffith Horatio Sanz/Judah Friedlander - Justin/Frank RossitanoThe list goes on.Unlike the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which was a wide departure from a show about a show format, this show has Wigfield, Fey & Carlock back in VERY familiar territory. It remains yet to be seen whether they've managed to capture lightning in a bottle, or merely static electricity on the rug.As many have noted, the WONDERFUL Andrea Martin has really carried the first few episodes, but she can't do it alone and this show be a success. The first 3 episodes have been a great starting point, but there's a definite need for some more spit and polish if this show is going to make it long term.
rogerdob I have watched many shows where the main character is annoying, but the supporting players are fine. This show manages to have EVERY character annoying. The lead in this show is a woman who talks too fast and too much and is a real millennial whiner. Her mother is supposed to be lovable but she is too overbearing. The "British" executive producer in charge of the show is not likable at all...which he should be in a show like this. Horatio Sanz is completely wasted in his character as an editor/director. The worst part...all the so-called jokes were predictable...you can see them coming.
