taswavo999 Not too bad - but couldn't help thinking (almost every 2-5 minutes) that this is a rip-off of the UK BBC series called Citizen Khan (first released in 2012 and still ongoing) The main male character is similar in behaviour in many respects. The difference in the two children is there. The wives are different in that one is overbearing and the other considerate, but both adhere to the wishes of the male. It's almost a remake with ethnic Koreans in USA, instead of Pakistani Muslims in UK. Very similar comedy styles. This series has all the embarrassment that locally born children of immigrant parents have. I like it - hence the 7 stars - but the original copy gets an 8. Like 'The Office' though - this may resonate better with US audiences that the original does with UK audiences. If only through what is regionally pertinent.
just_in_case Ill admit 5 seconds in I was almost offended but immediately it laid into jokes not about racial caricatures but about family and life for korean-americans. Theres a charming honesty to it that begs me to believe the players are real. There's a part in the first episode where the mr kims inquires as to why a drag queen chooses to live the way they do and its not funny. I mean theres no any joke. The whole scene has warmth. They pick and choose where to make us laugh and theres no laugh track thank god. Im hooked.
glocktac Full blooded yankee American here, love this Canadian Comedy. Funny and clean are hard to come by these days on TV. Can't wait for Season 3, as I binged watched 1 & 2.
Vanessa Rios I really love comedies, I grew up watching all the black and white classics and sitcoms were a staple of mine, foreign comedies are my go- to and nothing is better than a good laugh. This show? It's everything my little first generation born heart has yearned for in a comedy. In the vein of Cristella and Fresh off the Boat, this show is about an immigrant/first generation family and their day to day life in this ever changing, ever expanding community of the North Americas. But it's So. Much. Better. It's everything I had hoped from Cristella (as a child of Mexican immigrants) and what Fresh off the Boat just missed the mark on in terms of realism. It is an honest family show that echos so many of my own experiences and gives me such a happy outlook on them. This is such a great show and you won't be disappointed. The writing, the acting, the directing, all of it is just fantastic.
