marquisdeposa I avoided watching this series, but after enjoying both the recent BBC films ATTWN and WITNESS I thought I'd give it a try. Like any series where there is an earlier version(s) for comparison, and where there is a developed fan base for it, a new adaptation will come up for disagreement. My disappointment was in Walliams. Why did they make Tommy a bumbling boob? In both episodes I found myself routing for the villain when they encountered Tommy, and I even once shouted at the television "just shoot him" I didn't so much mind Raine. Even in the original she is the instigator and the one with the most energy. In defense of the series they didn't stray too far from the plot lines, add in any unnecessary sexual orientation switches, or even in those characters they altered (Albert) it was within the realm of the story. The only remaining novel not filmed is Postern of Fate (since Thumbs was included in the Marple series). It is not the best of the T&T books but with a good writer they could make it as interesting as Poirot's version of Elephants Can Remember, another late and perhaps weak Christie which they turned around admirably for the film. But if this one is filmed please replace Tommy
feussamy I'm disappointed that so many did not enjoy this series. I love Walliams and wish he were in more dramas. (Remember his great supporting character in The Body in the Library; Agatha Christie's Miss Marple?). I'm not that familiar with Raine but I thought she sparkled in this comedy/mystery. Along with Steer as the handless chemist they make a great ensemble. It appears some were disappointed because this was not a serious, grim show. Granted it was not Tinker, Tailor Soldier but I can't believe it as supposed to be. I gave it a 9 because the plots could be better but as a vehicle for these wonderful characters it worked.
Prismark10 I have vague memories of the early 1980s version of Tommy & Tuppence made by ITV. Francesca Annis certainly left a strong impression on me.The BBC remake was promoted as a Indiana Jones type, fast moving adventure. David Walliams whose production company was also involved was not as dashing or debonair as James Warwick. Jessica Raine tried her best with a dour script but the production was dead on arrival. It was hampered with three part stories which took me back to television of the 1970s when everything seemed to move at a snail's pace and episodes were padded to the hilt. The stories were not fast paced, thrilling or exciting. There was little sparkle between Walliams and Raine. The production quality was substandard. Just compare this to the far superior Sherlock which bought a certain élan which this series desperately needed.Walliams casting was risky but he made his character look like a bumbler. This is not Agatha Christie at her finest.
kushka53-454-558392 The male lead is utterly wooden and the pace is tedious at best. In the plot development, ludicrous and foolish choices are often made by him and his wife that no one in their right mind would make and live to tell about it! Perhaps with a different male lead and better directing this could have gone somewhere but as it stands it is very disappointing. Given the quality of murder mysteries (Lewis, Wire in the Blood, etc) and spy stories that come out of the UK (MI-5 for ex) this show is almost amateurish. The technical details are fine--lighting, locations, camera-work but the director and editor should look for other work!
