Reviews

lizardjims I am writing this review after the last episode of the series (S04E08) was broadcasted and I would be insincere if I didn't admit my frustration with the series production who disappointed many of the devoted ''Bridge'' fans around the world with a mediocre fourth season which didn't live up to the viewer's -admittedly high- expectations. The averageness of the fourth and final season was amplified by the fact that the previous, third season of the series was hands-down the best of the whole series. Season 3 began with one of the two main protagonists of the story, Martin Rhode (a nice -as always- performance by Kim Bodnia) the Danish detective being wiped out from the series (rumors are that Bodnia disagreed with the production, concerning the possible future of the character) and substituted by another Copenhagen detective Henrik Sabroe (Thure Lindhart is brilliant in this role) who has major traumatic events, related with the disappearance of his wife and two daughters, in his past which resulted in an addiction problem that he is painstakingly trying to hide from his co-workers and social circle. On the other hand, Saga is going to have to confront her own problems with her past which are rekindled when her estranged mother, whom Saga accuses of killing her little sister, appears and try to reconnect with her. Those personal sub-stories are developing throughout the ten, one-hour episodes of the third season in the shadow of the main plotline which is centered around a string of grisly murders on both sides of the Swedish-Danish borders which share a common denominator. All victims seem to have one of their body organs taken, suggesting a symbolic meaning in the killing, and the wits of Saga and Henrik is going to be challenged by a devious but intelligent serial-killer whose real agenda is unclear till the last episodes. Of course, as in every decent Scandi-Noir tv series, there are a lot of sub-plots and red-herrings as well as a large number of twists and turns to keep you glued to your seat. ''The Bridge'' is definitely a binge-worthy television series, and I think that along with ''Forbrydelsen'' and ''Bedrag'' consist the elite television products from Scandinavia. If you haven't seen any of the series seasons, I would recommend to start from the first one and keep on going with the second before viewing this one as many things that may seem unclear to someone who is watching the series for the first time will be explained and the viewer will feel more familiar with the great, three-dimensional main and secondary characters that make ''Bridge'' and highly-entertaining crime-noir experience. It is especially recommended to the Nordic Noir genre fans and those who very much enjoyed the novels by Jo Nesbo, Lars Kepler, Jussi Adler-Olsen and Stefan Ahnhem, to mention just a few.
pierreauparis I have only watched season one as I do not intend watching any further episodes of this Scandinavian abomination. I read reviews here on IMDB stating that this series was "The Best TV ever", "Well acted, brilliant story", "Hollywood can bite the dust" , etc, etc . Where have these reviewers been, watching TV..on another planet? Sure, everyone's got an opinion and good luck to that, but having sixty plus years of TV viewing experience, I can spot bad acting, bad editing, and an unbelievable story-line, even if it's clouded under an alien language with distracting (literal translation) subtitles. I will not bore you with examples of where this TV series fails, but I had just finished watching "The Killing" (US) version before this show which had taken me and my wife to 'TV paradise' for the duration of it's four seasons. The fact that it's story-line had originated from the Danish version had me searching for further Scandinavian products, which finally lead me to "The Bridge". Just like those constant dreadful rains of Seattle in TK, I persevered and continued to watch this show in the hope that "The Bridge" would finally transport me to Valhalla, but I kept wanting to jump from the parapet and end it all. I finally called a halt to the show 10 minutes from the end of the first series when I spotted the final continuity error for me of a head shot wound going amiss- unbelievable!I had watched Breaking Bad many years ago and gave up after 4 episodes as it had not drawn me in to it's plot quickly enough, but thankfully I returned a year later to resume my viewing and have never looked back since. It is my benchmark for TV series and despite discovering gems like "The Killing" of late, it will remain at the top of my list. On the other hand " The Bridge" seems to run 'Hot & Cold" with reviewers and I still need to understand why some of the 10/10 reviewers fail to see the obvious failings in this production... am I just getting old!?
chrissnuggs Well up to the awesome standard of "Borgen" and "The Killing". Detective Saga Noren is an original and fascinating character played with total brilliance by Sofia Helin. Crimes, plots and criminals are typically Nordic OTT: gruesome, dramatic and complicated. The policework is convincing with just an occasional lapse. Great exploration of themes, finishing with the family, family problems, and personal relationships. Suffering from withdrawal symptoms as with "The Killing" and one wishes there could be seasons 4, 5, 6 .... but total respect for what they have achieved in all three of these brilliant Scandinavian productions.
George Wright I'm into the third season of this riveting series. The plot is very complex with more characters than necessary but it draws the viewer into their various background stories, which are woven into each series. Suspenseful it is, and each season brings a new adventure against the dark side of human society; however, we see what is going on with the personal stories that hold our interest. In the first two seasons, we find the Swedish detective Saga working alongside Martin, her Danish counterpart, whose past catches up with him. Saga is challenged by autism, which strains her personal relationships, but Martin tries to help her with tips that she tries awkwardly to follow. Another Danish police detective, Henrik becomes her partner in season three. As with Martin, he too has a lot of personal baggage but he becomes fascinated with Saga. At first, the outlines of their personal histories are alluded to but in time, these become key to the plot. The main plots involve timely stories about refugees, eco-terrorists, and underworld characters who are pursued by Saga, Martin and Henrik along with their Danish and Swedish colleagues. Action swings back and forth over the bridge connecting the two countries. In fact, crimes happen close to the bridge thereby requiring both sides to work together. The setting is dark, grim and joyless but there are genuine human touches from time to time. This series is harsh but we enjoy the twists and turns in the stories and the personal lives of the characters.
