Synopsis

Before there were parenting blogs, trophies for showing up, and peanut allergies, there was a simpler time called the '80s. For geeky 11-year old Adam these were his wonder years and he faced them armed with a video camera to capture all the crazy. The Goldbergs are a loving family like any other, just with a lot more yelling.

Aaron Redis A middle class family set in the '80s. Ah, what a breath of fresh air! "The Goldbergs" is one of my favorite sitcoms to this day. It's a great show to watch with your family or on your own. Though it's not entirely original in the sense that a lot of the episodes are remakes of social trends in the '80s, it's great for the purpose of nostalgia and for the sake of laughing until you cry. The best part is that this show is based off the real lives of The Goldberg family, which leads me to another thing that I love about "The Goldbergs" . . . the old home footage! I love these little snippets they show at the end of each episode. It's cool to think the shenanigans and nonsensical fun actions we watch on the television were things that actually happened within the Goldberg family in the '80s!I absolutely love Beverly and her overprotective mom personality. She's definitely a stand-out, as is Adam, as it's all in his perspective . . . But, now that I speak of characters, I have come to realize that I really love all the characters! They all have BIG and special personalities. If you don't love one, there's certainly another for you to love! The later seasons are certainly losing their magic touch, but it's still worth a watch. The biggest problem is that some of the recent episodes feel a little derivative and formulaic (i.e., someone argues over something, they make up, they move on). The show started on the complete other end of the spectrum (in that it wasn't tediously formulaic), which was something that I especially enjoyed about the show, because when it started, it had ambition that was reminiscent of community. Needless to say that I will continue watching until the show concludes, because here, the good far outweighs the bad.I really hope that more people can discover this show for the gem that it is. I find it underwatched and underrated. It deserves more praise, and I know as a fact that I am not the only one who thinks so! :o)Even those who did not grow up in the '80s can find something to enjoy in this series. However, I will say, I think for those who did grow up in the era, this show will bring them back to their childhood, and I think they will love that. Watching it for the sake of nostalgia could be fun enough! In short, this is a cute show with various '80s references. The family is cute and they'll make you laugh. It's colores, it's dynamic, and it's touching. There is a lot to love!Don't let me speak for you, though! Give the show a try for yourself! Seriously, if you're not watching yet, what are you waiting for?! :o)I give "The Goldbergs" an 8.3/10.
alv790 I had read good reviews. 8.2 average on IMDb as I write this...I was very disappointed when I started watching and realized that it is a collection of the laziest family sitcom tropes, without much heart and no laughter. The idea of humor is actors shouting every time they speak. It's supposedly inspired in the childhood of the creator, so that makes it difficult for me to understand why it is so generic and lacking personality.A disappointment. I like family sitcoms, but this is very low quality. I mean, when you make a nostalgic family/childhood sitcom with the child character narrating as an adult, you are competing with The Wonder Years, and The Goldbergs can not hold a candle to that show. Don't lose time with this, just go watch The Wonder Years instead.
Maria Trim The Goldbergs is an autobiography written by Adam F Goldberg a television and film producer and writer. His hobby was filming and video of his family and he wrote plays from an early age. The main character of The Goldbergs is Adam Goldberg who does the same obviously, and at the end of every episode you see clips taken by the original Adam F Goldberg and they mirror the same in this show. Its done really well and is an essential part I think of the show. Barry, Murray and Beverely and the grandad are all part of the autobiography and Erica is based on the other brother Eric. Back to the show. Every episode deals with something in the eighties, if you lived through them you will get a real kick out of it. I LOVED it and it really brought back some great memories. The family are very manipulative to each other i think, and the mother well really she would drive me mad or should you call her smother lol, she just loves her family way too much and expects way too much of them. I think it could become tedious at times, but all the different stories every episode stopped me from wanting to literally kill her lol. The character for me was granddad, George Segal you have to really watch him as he does some funny things in the background but what i have read he was early stage Alzheimer in real life sadly. Overall just a great escape for half an hour with lots of laughter and a tinge of frustration, but i am so pleased to hear the show is being extended to 5/6 seasons. Now for a little moan. Maybe i got it wrong but i lost myself in the children's ages. The family are from a strict Jewish family and don't even do Christmas, so how come when it was what i believed Adams 13 birthday he didn't have a bar mitzvah? Also again i got lost in the ages as season 4 when Erica is going to end up going to college Murray said she was 17, but she seemed to have been that age for a long time, as how old did it make Barry? He seemed to never age then, as he did driver ed earlier on in the season which i thought was 16. We only seemed to see Adam's birthdays perhaps it was down to the difficulty in some of the timeline being accurate. Anyway it didn't spoil it for me, i really found it great and the family and friends all work well together but please give Erica a boyfriend. Watch it you wont be disappointed.
martin-intercultural The way this show has evolved is sadly typical of network TV: It started out raw and edgy. But after a few episodes, network execs clearly panicked when research showed that such-and-such demographic was uncomfortable. And so everything got toned down. The cast are visibly confused about how to reconcile their characters' vile and loud-mouthed attitudes with the inevitable soft and fuzzy and cuddly ending every story gravitates to. Most of them end up settling for one-trick-pony performaces. Compare the teenage Erica with real 80s' Becky Connor on Roseanne: What a gap. Overall, the show is highly entertaining by today's standards. But it constantly teeters on bland, and the viewer can't help sensing squandered potential.
