EP1 Episode 1 Aug 28, 2005

Tyrannosaurus Rex: six tons of muscle and teeth, and the most famous killer the world has ever known. Triceratops: armoured and equivalent to an elephant-sized rhino wearing a spiked helmet. To illustrate the destructive capabilities of these creatures, life-sized, bio-mechanical replicas were made - a T. Rex head made of solid steel, and Triceratops skull complete with three horns. They were then put on trial to conduct the most detailed analysis ever attempted.

EP2 Episode 2 Sep 04, 2005

Velociraptor could be described as the scariest dinosaur in the world, ever. Armed with huge disembowelling claws, as sharp as steak knives, it guts its prey with a single sweep of its powerful legs. Or so it would seem in Steven Spielberg's movies - but what are the facts? Continuing his quest to find out the truth, Bill Oddie tracks down the real raptor to find it had feathers. Not only did the two-legged flesh-eater look more like a bird than a lizard, but the velociraptor nailed its victims with a far deadlier strike than a slash to the stomach. But was it invincible?Bill introduces a battle tank-like Ankylosaur, the ultimate defended dinosaur. With its armour-plated skin and vicious bone-crushing club, the stupidest dinosaur of all time might have been more than a match for a fleet-footed Mongolian Marauder. Or was it?Comparisons with living animals such as alligators and hawks provide Bill with clues as to how these two dinosaurs used their weaponry. Using this information, he constructs accurate working models of a Velociraptor leg, complete with its killer claw, as well as an Ankylosaur's fearsome tail club. And then he puts them to the test.

paultorney Loved it. But then again I love them all. Walking with dinosaurs. Walking with beasts. A beautiful combination of sound research, educated guesses and artistic license. But they all raise new and puzzling questions. In this case why did the T Rex SHAPE die out? The triceratops shape re evolved as the modern rhinoceros and ankylasorous as the modern tortoise. In the first age of mammals (walking with beasts) even the T Rex shape re evolved in the form of huge predatory birds. But, after that, all of the top land predators went from hunting, almost exclusively, on two legs, to hunting only on four. The bear is the only modern carnivore that walks upright.Really strange???
