Shred_Master I grew up in the 80's and the OG Voltron was one of my go to shows back in the day. I even remember the other Voltron too, the one with the vehicles. I had both Voltron toys as well. Safe to say, I was a fan. This new show is everything it should and needed to be. It reintroduces Voltron to the kids of today, while properly paying homage to original show. The spirit of what made Voltron so popular in the 80's was kept well in tact. You have the same lion pilots (now called "paladins") but they are each given more of a backstory. Even the villains are more captivating, as they dive into their pasts and what motivates them to do what they do. The animation is stunning and Voltron itself does not disappoint. There is also more a season by season storytelling arc, as opposed to the old series, which was more episodic - team has to get the lions, robeast is sent, form Voltron, form blazing sword, strike, day is won. The new show managed to do the seemingly impossible - make the new series good like the old one was, while also doing something new, deeper and unlike what we've seen before in the franchise.I look forward to each new season, which thankfully are not very far apart. Highly recommend for any Voltron fans!
NerdLifeChoice Finally, an animation series that is worth binge-watching and being a die-hard fan for. The intellectual plot-line and the clean, but smart/ silly humor make this series very much remnant of the golden years of cartoon network (1995 to 2005). Remember swat cats, centurions, transformers prime and avatar the last air-bender? This series rightfully joins their rank and honestly, praise cannot go higher than that. This is a must watch for all ages and for true-blue sci-fi animation fans who want a light-hearted, but heart warming and though provoking series to really get into.Netflix have genuinely produced a master-piece with this one and I honestly can't wait for the new season to release.Cheers.
timisshopping The original lion series in 1984-1985 came to be known as "robeast of the week". It was so shallow without any real character development for heroes or villains. I felt voltron vehicle force tried to be the more mature show while the lions were completely vacuous. I was 11 in 1984 and even I grew tiresome of the one dimensional episodes. The legendary defender however, while also a lion force is truly amazing. For one it's a terrific collaboration between Japanese animation and dreamworld studio. You will still get these character emotions which are truly Japanese showing love, anger, frustration, envy etc while all character speaking perfect English. In addition to the great collab which we didn't see in the original, is the fantastic plunge into the mythos and history of the characters. While I'm up to date in the 5th season, so many characters including Pidge, princes and especially Lotor and his lineage (father, mother and friends) are so well fleshed out, we really do care about every single one of them. The series has also taken twists and turns that we never saw before like the princess piloting that blue lion and Lance the traditionally blue paladin piloting the red lion. Meanwhile, Keith, the red paladin isn't even in a lion, but fighting with a Galra rebellion squad. It's all completely out of the box, which makes it that much more realistic and believable. Please make more of this terrific show!!!
brainpls Overall, I would say that I enjoy this show. It has great animation, excellent voice acting, and characters with potential. Unfortunately, my attachment to this show seems to be relying solely on potential I see that has yet to be met, even after 2 seasons. The main issue with this show is that it has no idea what its strengths and weaknesses are. It tries to do a TON of different things, just trying to see what sticks. Another big issue is the conveniences. Many characters are capable of or learn special abilities in the show, yet they seem to only work once and NOT when they're most needed. The series has arguably 7 main characters. While I didn't enjoy Keith or Shiro in the first season, they were virtually the only characters that had any sort of...well, CHARACTER in Season 2. Everyone else is abruptly shoved to the sideline and shoehorned into a single defining trait, making them dull and repetitive. Hunk is the food-obsessed fat guy. Pidge is the tech geek. Lance is the comedy guy. That's all they are, nothing more. The villains are also about as compelling as a cardboard box, as we are given nearly no backstory or decent motivation for them at all. It's overall pretty disappointing to see people who worked on such great shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Justice League Unlimited, and The Legend of Korra write such a sloppy show with so much unused potential. What could be episodes focused on developing characters and working towards the plot are spent on pointless side quests with more-miss-than-hit comedy, most of which having to do with fueling their ship. None of the character balance, consistent pacing, compelling story, atmosphere, or depth from the staff's prior work seems to be fully realized in this project. That being said, the show is not completely doomed. It still has a lot of potential. If the next season(s) spend more time making the characters interesting and creating a more compelling story, it could definitely live up to the hype. I don't want this show to be bad, and I'm going to continue watching it in hopes that it realizes exactly how great it could be.
