Larry Thomas Writing awful, directing questionable, and characters intelligence are disgusting.
wrlj2 Confession; I didn't finish it. That is an extreme rarity, as some bizarre force normally compels me to slog through some of the worst of Hollywood's offerings. But when it became apparent, about 2/3rds through, that some mysterious cloud of dark smoke was the evil culprit at the bottom of this twisted mix, I lost interest. It begins with promise, with engrossing interplay between the two stars in some psychiatric evaluation scenes that had the potential of good story telling. A creative why-done-it combined with the question of whether the multiple personalities were genuine could have made for worthwhile theater. Alas, it was not to be. Enter the smoke, exit entertainment value.... and me. A waste of 2 capable actors.
Paul Evans I quite enjoyed this, it's one of those films I saw the trailer, was wowed by it, and wanted to be utterly blown away by. Excellent in a number of ways, principally the performances of Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, the latter in particular fantastic. A very dark story, with some cracking concepts. Lost its way a bit when the Witch Doctor was introduced, those scenes were so over the top they spoiled it a bit.I wonder if M Night Shyamalan took anything from this when it came to developing Split. Some genuinely creepy, dark moments, not least the moments with Cara's father, and then daughter suffering at the hands of David. To begin with it's a little slow, the directing could have been a bit punchier, but as it opens up and moves along it becomes rather engrossing.Dark, watchable, but could have been so much better, 7/10
wjw293 Frighteningly enough, I understand what the script writer was trying to accomplish when he was crafting "6 Souls," I really do. Unfortunately, while it is an enjoyable thriller/horror film, you need a minor in sociology and history to understand some of the elements of the film and where the mythology of the backdrop becomes difficult to understand. The storyline becomes a bit convoluted without an understanding of several non-traditional practices such as Hex magic, Appalachian conjuration (and it's dark twin, non-Wiccan witchcraft, so please, don't shoot the messenger on this one) and soul riding. That being said, either the screen writer knows too much about these subjects or too little, resulting in a confusing mish-mash for those who haven't any idea about the landscape that forms the background for this tale. However, if the viewer can move beyond the limitations of the film (in short, too many elements that would have individually made an excellent thriller), the movie is enjoyable and a good way to spend an afternoon if the viewer is in the mood for a thriller. Just realize that as a viewer, you will, in all likelihood, have to suspend disbelief until the credits roll. That being said, Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are excellent in their characterizations even if there are some aspects of the film that completely derail from anything that is familiar within circles of the occult (try a search engine if you don't believe me). The cast is excellent, even if the script is about as realistic as finding a zombie using your toothbrush one morning in your bathroom.Ironically, were the screen writer to focus on a prequel to the film, many of these elements would be answered and as a sequel, "6 Souls" would be a fascinating sequel.
