hellholehorror It looks a bit messy but then again it is an old film. It is quite nicely shot. It looks good for a film of this age but it does not sound good for any film. The audio quality is low. There is little dynamic range in the sound. You could tell what was going on but that is the highlight for the audio. The makers of Fallout have definitely seen this film! It is pretty good. The story is interesting and a different take on post-nuclear war life. A classic nuclear devastation movie that has many references in modern films and games.
Noah Tall Definitely a hardcore science-fiction film in the post-apocalyptic genre. Movies like these are something rare in modern cinema, which was what made this fun to watch. I liked the relationship between the boy and his dog, it was pretty entertaining actually, and the scene with the Screamers was cool too, I imagine some people might have found that a bit frightening. The State of Topeka was neat. And I guess that the big guy was supposed to be a robot, right? There was a number of things left unexplained but I think he was. The ending was terrible though. I actually liked the characters at first, even though the boy was a rapist, I thought he had turned good by the end, but I see that wasn't true at all. I hated that.I don't know, one could argue and say that the girl he ate was bad for having deceived him and all that, but really? He killed her and then fed her to his dog? What in God's name kind of an ending is that?! I realize they were trying to end it with a little dark humor but that was just going too far. I would have gave the film a higher rating, maybe a six or a seven, but because of that final scene I give it a four. That was just unforgivable, a terrible way to end an otherwise great movie. That being said, it was good sci-fi, which explored several themes like good sci-fi normally does. And the film wasn't afraid to explore controversial themes, such as rape and other forms of violence, savagery, cannibalism, nuclear warfare and a dystopian society. The source material (the book) is something I haven't read, but I am familiar with Harlan Ellison and from what I've heard he was a bit of a prick when it came to his stories. He wrote the classic Star Trek episode "City on the Edge of Forever," which is considered one of the best, but the story was altered quite a bit from the way it was originally written...for good reason in my opinion since it was going to involve an execution on the Enterprise, and executions shouldn't happen in the Federation, that just doesn't seem normal. He also alleged that "The Terminator" was based on material published in two of his books, and this was settled by having his name in the credits. All in all, I don't care for the writer, based on what I've heard about the guy, but what do I know?
utgard14 Interesting post-apocalyptic movie about a young man (Don Johnson) roaming around with his telepathic dog looking for food and sex. He meets a woman who lures him underground to a place that's unlike anything on the surface. The movie's written and directed by, of all people, western character actor L.Q. Jones. He adapted this from a Harlan Ellison short story. I haven't read the original so I don't know how much of this script is Ellison and how much is Jones. To be clear, the characterizations and dialogue are what make this movie entertaining. The story is nothing special, really. You've seen one post-apocalyptic movie, you've (at least partially) seen them all. It's a very repetitive subgenre of sci-fi. The idea here about the telepathic dogs only works so well because of the great dialogue in the film. Both the dog and Don Johnson's character are well-written and you care about them both throughout the movie. Well, maybe you care more about the dog. Anyway, it's not a bad movie despite some unpleasantness for the sake of the 'dread god realism.' Give it a shot if you like sci-fi of this type or just cult '70s movies in general.
Orion Gallagher If you've not seen this yet, stop reading and go see it. Now! Don Johnson's first movie is an amazing romp through the post apocalyptic landscape. A land full of mutants, telepathic dogs, and a young man that just needs to get laid. It's about the bond a boy and his dog have for each other. It's about loyalty.I won't try to bore you with the hows and whats. I only want to assure you this is not time wasted. I truly believe that once you've seen it, it will become one of your favorites. It will become a movie you'll want to share with your friends. Its a movie you'll someday want to share with your son.Are you still here? Go, watch it!
