gizmomogwai A terrible film on every single level, A*P*E (cleverly described by one critic as "not very O*R*I*G*I*N*A*L") was nevertheless a bright spot of my day. The scenes with the actors were often slow and painful, with the odd smack of unintentionally funny dialogue ("You're asking me to be gentle for a rape scene!"- paraphrasing). But every time I saw the man in the cheap monkey suit, I couldn't help but smile. It doesn't exactly lumber, doesn't exactly hop, doesn't exactly move in a monkey-like agile way either. He just moves along, and gets to play in miniature villages. It's hilarious! The battle with the giant snake was also anti-climactic. He picks it up and simply throws it, like a baby learning to throw a toy. And when I finally saw that legendary "prehistoric creature gives the finger" scene, I was over the moon. How ridiculous this Gigantopithecus knows the gesture! Perhaps he picked it up from those archers who inexplicably began firing at him for no reason ("Monkey see, monkey do".) The special effects in the King Kong 1976 remake are nearly as bad as this, but that movie took itself a lot more seriously than this, which is at least one point you can give to A*P*E. Seeing our monkey man flapping his arms at the helicopters, as if mocking swimming moves in air, got long and repetitive fast. Still, for unintentional humour, particularly for King Kong fans, look no further.
Julian R. White You mean to tell me they made this in 3D? But why? It's awful! I genuinely thought this was gonna be just its own movie, but as time carries on, you realize that this is quite literally, a King Kong ripoff, with much of the scenarios being nearly identical. You think we're dealing with a monstrous gorilla, but it turns out he's just a big, STUPID monkey, and I mean his head is hollow! He moves around in a ridiculous fashion, he constantly makes a fool of himself, and not to mention the effects in this movie are literally something you would see come out of a high school class. It was total crap.
capkronos Original ads warned, "Not the be confused with KING KONG." Not a problem there, pals! This not only makes one yearn to see the original 1933 KONG again, but it makes the Dino De Laurentiis remake look like a revisionist masterpiece. The FX work (originally shown in 3-D) is even cheesier than the old Toho GODZILLA movies as "ten tons" of simian fury (AKA - guy in monkey suit) crushes a model city, sinks a toy ship and wrestles around with "giant" rubber snake and shark creatures. It's all for the love of an actress, played by Joanna De Varona who is actually Joanna Kerns, the mother from the Growing Pains TV series! APE sure is funny and worth watching, but going by the general rules of movie scoring, it's a...Score: 1 out of 10
warlorde I must confess to liking giant monster movies, but this film is really just plain awful! Bad special effects, even worse acting, silly premise. By the way that big snake would be considered a monster! Anyway painful as it was I made it through to the end. I chuckled a few times while watching this mess, just not believing what I'm seeing or hearing.1 out of 10, for bad movies beware 5 out of 10. Suffer with me.
