drprashantjmd There are certain movies that leave you thinking about it. Many times. Scenes keep crossing your mind. This is one of those! The story begins and ends with the same shot. If the beginning makes you curious the ending leaves you heartbroken. And Irony. When the little boy, Phillip, has the best chance of running away, he decides to accompany Costner because he stole a Halloween costume. He finds those pleasures of life in the company of his kidnapper which in his mother's he never did. Costner himself, when rebuking young Cleve's father for assaulting the child, makes an enemy out of himself. His repugnance for child-beaters stands in stark contrast with his own methods. The duality hits you in the face. Something, Buzz is unable to withstand. Like all Eastwood movies this too is a slow paced drama. The director effectively communicates that not all criminals are born, some are created. There can be niches for love and affection in them too. Certain circumstances can make those reservoirs flow. Time and again, Clint Eastwood keeps coming up with a gem of a story. Don't go by the rating. This one is not to be missed.
Jean-Pol Cardin My opinion---Another wonderful movie signed by Clint Eastwood, an excellent road movie doubling a very beautiful dramatic story between a prisoner on the run Kevin Costner in one of his best roles in Butch Haynes and "is a 10 year old boy," TJ Lowther in The role of Phillip Perry "the story is really taking from the beginning to the end, it is of course a drama, although some scenes that actually lend to make smile more than once (Clint Eastwood has this disconcerting facility to pass The emotions like that, despite the gravity of the subject treated.) There will be a surprising final twist. This film is awesome and asks only one thing is to be seen.
Predrag This film is one of those rare movies that manage to use the strengths of all involved. First, this is the very best of Clint Eastwood both as a director and actor. Eastwood the director learned his trade from Don Siegel, who made a bunch of no-nonsense 70's action films, many of them with Eastwood as the star. Eastwood learned his trade well from the master. He can edit the fat out of a film very effectively. Eastwood the actor really shines in this film as well in a supporting role as a Texas Ranger at the tail end of a career doing a kind of slow burn as events unfold around him.The story flow feels a little bit choppy, and not having watched other Eastwood-directed films, I'm not sure where the majority of the blame falls. The editing is simple and to the point, which occasionally makes shots feel too obvious, but again, after only one viewing, I don't have the problem completely pinpointed yet. The darkness brings the story to very believable light, but there are also some more complex relationships and themes in A Perfect World. Savannah Smiles is about two crooks changing their ways. This film is about fatherhood, or at least the fatherhood role. And in contrast to the film's title, fathers aren't always perfect. One thing, however, that this movie shouts perfectly clearly is a call to men: boys look to those around them for mentors. And even if you're a murdering, stealing, lying crook, there's quite likely some young boy who sees something you do, and thinks "I want to be like that." Overall rating: 8 out of 10.
treeline1 Butch (Kevin Costner) escapes from prison, takes a little boy named Phillip hostage, and leads the police (headed by Clint Eastwood) on a 2-day chase through rural Texas. The boy forms a close bond with his kidnapper who turns out to be a compassionate, though flawed, man. This is a very good movie with some humor and a lot of suspense. Butch and Phillip's scenes are pure gold, extremely well-written and believable. Kevin Costner gives an excellent, subtle, and sympathetic performance. Seven-year old T. J. Lowther is perfect as the boy who sees the getaway as a fun and grown-up adventure; he's endearing without being too-sweet. The movie alternates between Butch and Phillip and their pursuers, and while Eastwood is good as the steely Texas Ranger, Laura Dern is just annoying in a thankless role as a scowling criminologist. I would have given the movie 10 stars if all of the scenes without Butch and Phillip were deleted; they are wonderful together and the rest of the cast is just there to pad the movie.Directed by Eastwood, the film is ultimately a sad one but Costner and Lowther are outstanding.
