Milk_Tray_Guy All-Star Superman is one of the most popular Superman stories there is. For some Grant Morrison fans it borders on being a sacred text. And as is the way with sacred texts, any deviation from the 'word' borders on blasphemy; however, in this case those fans have a point. Morrison (and artist Frank Quitely) crafted a deeply layered work. Morrison loves the more 'goofy' Silver Age of comics and it shows, but beneath all the 'wacky stuff' (dinosaur men??) is a narrative that's interwoven with the book's structure. Originally running twelve issues published over two volumes, each issue or chapter reflects a specific time of year and/or hour of the day (interviews with Morrison regarding this make interesting reading). Unfortunately, because of the necessity to edit the whole thing down to a 70 minute running-time much of that structure - along with many scenes and therefore continuity - is lost. The result is we're left with a series of what sometimes appear to be random incidents that head-scratchingly don't quite tie together. That said, the voice actors do an first-rate job, as do the illustrators/animators in recreating the feel of Quitely's artwork. And the story is still definitely a touching one. Overall, 7/10
adonis98-743-186503 After being poisoned by sun radiation, a dying Superman decides to fulfill his lifelong dreams while Lex Luthor has his own agenda. This movie had a pretty good opening but also the story works Superman dying and he tries to do some of his dreams but also he and Lois spend some time together while Lex tries to think his next master plan. Then Lex gets he exact super powers and they have they're big climatic final battle but also Superman says goodbye to Lois and sacrifices himself which means that Clark Kent a.k.a Superman is dead or isn't? It depends on your fantasy some might think he's dead but some other's that he don't. All Star Superman is a great movie that tries to show Superman why he's such a great character and cares about everyone and succeeds on that 100% level.
stevenjlowe82 I'll keep it brief. I have been working my way through the DC animated catalogue and so far have really enjoyed them all, until now!!!It got a three because I adored the animation and the ole fashioned feel it had. I will confess to not watching the entire film but that was because of LOIS!!!! What did they do to her in this, she is so unlikable and in my opinion unwatchable. She was so snyd and immature and basically a bit of a b**ch. I got as far as her getting Superman to agree to have some kind of prove your worth contest with the 2 numb skulls who showed up, "after all it's my birthday" is her reasoning. Honestly couldn't watch any further.
nickzouvas The only change I would make would be to add about 30 minutes to the movie to expand on some things. I agree with an earlier review about the musical score completely. It was one of the best I have ever heard. This movie was pretty short, sweet, and to the point. The plot does move quickly, but makes sense while having some side stories. The side plot line about the Kryptonians is great, though kind of random. It's a great add-in to the movie.Yes, the media and people love seeing superman die, but that's because he's the man of steel and supposedly unkillable. All in all, great movie and would recommend it not only to ALL Superman fans, but any comic book fans in general!
